The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area.

Longtime radio personality and The Big Broadcast host Ed Walker passed away early on Oct. 26 at age 83. We invite you to leave your thoughts and remembrances.

Saying Goodbye To Ed Walker

Ed Walker spent 65 years on the radio. His last program was unlike any other.

Hello, FRiends! I'm filling in for Vision, who's busy today, although he may check in with us--I'm not sure.

Again, Murray is scrapping the traditional intro-three lineup shows for his own version of The Big Broadcast. I don't like it, but he doesn't seem to care what faithful Big Broadcast listeners think. On the WAMU Big Broadcast show lineup, he now posts stupid asterisk warnings by programs with "violence, e.g. gunplay." HOW STUPID! This guy is a "politically correct" liberal, and that's really too bad for this show and its listeners. He's also going to air an Independence Day message from that commie FDR. But, the one treat he saves for last is an "Options" with our dearly-missed host Ed Walker.

These brief synopses are used with permission from the RadioGOLDINdex © 2016 J. David Goldin.

7:00 PM Eastern War Time Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. May 4, 1956. Part 5. CBS net. "The Calicles Matter." Sustaining. The answer lies with a 3000 year old Greek. Conclusion of story. Sysyem cue deleted, apparently otherwise complete. Amerigo Moreno (music supervisor), Bert Holland, Bob Bailey, Carleton Young, Harry Bartell, Herb Vigran, Jack Johnstone (director), Jeanne Bates, John Dawson (writer), Lawrence Dobkin, Lillian Buyeff, Marvin Miller, Roy Rowan (announcer), Virginia Gregg, Will Wright. 13:50. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete as above.

7:15 Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. October 3, 1955. Part 1. CBS net. "The McCormack Matter." Sustaining. A dying prison inmate puts Johnny on the trail of stolen loot. Not every performer listed below appears in every episode. Bob Bailey, John Dawson (writer), Jack Johnstone (director), Roy Rowan (announcer), Mary Jane Croft, Virginia Gregg, Marvin Miller, Forrest Lewis, Frank Gerstle, Herb Butterfield, Herb Ellis, Tony Barrett, Ken Christy, Jack Kruschen, Junius Matthews, Amerigo Moreno (music). 14:52. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

7:30 Calling All Cars. July 4, 1934. Program #32. CBS Pacific net (Don Lee net). "July Fourth In A Radio Car." Sponsored by: Rio Grande Oil ("Calling All Cars Radio Log"). Fireworks are being exploded within the city limits. The announcer twice mentions that this is "broadcast #35." A holiday spent by radio in a police car. "A slice of actual life." The above date is accurate (the program is about the fourth of July holiday). The program number is possibly #32, despite what the announcer says, unless there is a three week error in the relationship of the program numbers and dates. After the drama, Mr. Lindsley announces that "there were thirty-four characters (in the radio drama)...played by twelve people," and unlike other programs, names them all. Mary Tuthill, Jeanette Nolan, Martha Wentworth, Ralph Scott, Joe Franz, Hanley Stafford, Sam Pierce, Charlie Lung, Richard LeGrand, Robert Frazer, Fred Harrington, Lindsay MacHarrie, William N. Robson (writer, producer), Charles Frederick Lindsley (narrator). 29:15. Audio condition: Very good. Complete.

8:00 Gunsmoke. November 10, 1957. CBS net origination, AFRTS rebroadcast. "Gun Shy." Tom Wilson has come to Dodge from Baltimore, and is very much out of place on the prairie. William Conrad, Marian Clark (writer), Vic Perrin, Parley Baer, Howard McNear, Georgia Ellis, Norman Macdonnell (producer, director), Rex Koury (composer, conductor), Ray Kemper (sound patterns), Bill James (sound patterns), George Walsh (announcer). 25:19. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

8:20 President Franklin Roosevelt. July 4, 1941. Pool feed, Mutual net. A patriotic message on Independence Day, from Hyde Park, New York. Franklin Roosevelt. 8 minutes. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

8:30 The Pursuit Of Happiness. November 5, 1939. CBS net. Sustaining. With Gertrude Niessen and Robert Benchley out to buy clothing for the Mrs. Carl Van Doren appears in a skit written by himself about Benjamin Franklin. The program concludes with Robeson's famous, "Ballad for Americans." Norman Corwin (producer, director), Burgess Meredith (host), Gertrude Niesen, Robert Benchley, Carl Van Doren, Paul Robeson, Carl Carmer, George Faulkner (writer), Hank Lewis (writer), Al Garson (writer), Mark Warnow (music director). 1/2 hour. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

9:00 You Are There. July 4, 1948. CBS net. "The Signing Of The Declaration Of Independance." Sustaining. The events of July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia. An incorrect system cue has been added. John Daly (anchor), George Fielding Eliot, Ken Roberts, Ned Calmer, Bud Collyer. 27:31. Audio condition: Excellent. Incomplete.

9:30 The Cavalcade Of America. July 5, 1943. Red net. "Listen To The People." Sponsored by: DuPont. A poetic program about America on Independence Day. The epilogue by Carl Sandburg is read by Ethel Barrymore. Stephen Vincent Benet (author), Ethel Barrymore, Bud Collyer (announcer), Donald Voorhees (conductor), Carl Frank (doubles), Will Geer (doubles), Stefan Schnabel, Edwin Jerome, Norman Lloyd, Karl Swenson, Ted Jewett, Everett Sloane, Barbara Weeks, Alfred Shirley, Frank Readick, Homer Fickett (producer, director), Arden Cornwell (composer). 29:25. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

10:00 “Options” The 4th of July with Ed Walker. (NPR, Original airdate July 4, 1978). The Index does not have this synopsis.

Hey Gina, greetings from Williamsburg. We’re heading out to a concert shortly. He put an advisory on Johnny Dollar? What a snowflake loser. What a bizarre ego this guy has.

Hi, Vision! Yes, he put the “gunplay” “violence” warning on Johnny Dollar, Calling All Cars and Gunsmoke. Such a PANSY thing to do!

I hope you all have fun at the show!

Oooooh, it’s a hot one, Viking! Sounds like you’re having a good time. Happy Independence Day weekend! I forgot to say that up at the front of the thread. :-)

Murray just spent about two minutes giving a stupid disclaimer on all the things in “Calling All Cars” that might “offend” his punk snowflake listeners. I don’t like this guy’s presentation AT ALL.

It was painful.

Heh. Our big American flag mounted to the porch post flies 24x7x365. It's always Independence Day around here. Just put up some bunting and whatnot around the pool fence. As for the heat, this is the first chance I've had to go fishing since The Walking Dead zombie virus tried to eat my leg. I'll take the 96 degrees and one lousy bream for the sheer joy factor. Tomorrow, it's gonna be BBQ chicken wings, smoked ribs, macaroni salad and banana pudding, cold beer, a big pool, fireworks (the big Roman candle types are legal here), lounging under my palm tree, and maybe some limited small-caliber target practice among the adults. God, guns, family, heritage. Everything that makes Obama's fool head explode. (Oh, we can only wish.................)

That's it. We need to start piling on Murray at WAMU and demand Rob back. I was really starting to warm up to the guy. I said it weeks ago - after I took one look at Murray's 'professional' qualifications and that publicity pic, I had a feeling he was gonna be some quivering PC mess.

He’s a piece of work, SteelYourFaith. I can hardly tolerate listening to his Brave New World crap. I’ve commented on the WAMU Big Broadcast threads, telling them to knock off the “political correctness,” but to no avail. They’re hardcore liberals, and they’re sticking to their nonsense, period.

We keep Old Glory hanging here year-round, too. Always. With a spotlight on it at night. And, today I have a bunch of small stick flags lining the edge of the yard. Tonight we’re doing the barbecued chicken, and I’ll make the homemade macaroni and cheese. Keith has to work tomorrow, so he’s taking the chicken and macaroni and cheese to the ladies he works with at one of his clinics. We’ll have it for dinner tonight to make sure it’s okay for them to eat for lunch tomorrow. :-)

I didn’t like Rob Bamberger’s speech impediment AT ALL, but I would take him over this liberal Murray Horowitz any day. Murray is ruining this show. I keep commenting on the Disqus threads at the BB page at WAMU’s site, but they don’t care what we say. Here’s a link to this week’s thread in case you’d like to add your thoughts: http://wamu.org/programs/the_big_broadcast/16/07/03/the_big_broadcast_july_3_2016#disqus_thread

I saw one of your spot-on comments on WAMU.
I don't have access to my Disqus account to chime in, plus I only have a small sample of Murray's magic on which to comment.
Really cringeworthy intro to Gunsmoke.
Ed may have been a liberal but he wasn't obnoxious.
Does Murray realize he risks alienating his audience, as the vast majority of Americans would not appreciate his creepy propaganda?

I think Murray doesn’t give a rip who among the faithful listeners he runs off. I have a feeling most of the NPR staff members don’t like this program anyway. It’s too AMERICAN for their commie tastes, and if the listenership plummets, then they’re fine with that.

Keith just said we should start a Facebook petition to get Murray Horowitz removed, but he also said it would like never happen.

And an excellent comment it was, Viking!

This guy will be choosing commie-sympathetic shows. This one here was just talking about private property belonging to everyone. It’s communist propaganda! I’ll bet he will NEVER play “I Was A Communist For The FBI.”

Old time radio does reflect the attitudes and values of traditional America, and much more sanity and common sense than the mental disorder that is contemporary liberalism.
It always seemed a bit incongruous that leftwing NPR/WAMU tolerated the Big Broadcast to me.
Yeah, Horribly Horrified Horowitz may be intentionally killing it off.
