A West Glacier man was killed by a grizzly bear Wednesday afternoon while riding his mountain bike on a forested trail in the Halfmoon Lakes area south of Glacier National Park.

Giant, inflatable airbags. That would deflect them, you could use available technology from vehicle airbags. Call them Bearbags.
.357 won’t help much against the Brown Bear. .454 Casul is your Huckleberry in Grizzly country.
No
If they feel threatened or are hungry or just mean.....the only thing that will stop them is a big enough projectile or well placed blade
The latter has happened but it’s pricey to the victor
Bill Hickok for one
I have been to glacier many times and this is not terribly rare
Bears are bears
Unlike many here though I place human life above a bear usually
I have been in glacier park in 1977...right before E died and a bear killed two menustrating girls in their tent
The crusty old cowboy ranger....try finding one of those nowadays....went in with his pack mule and 45-70 and 10 gauge and 44 sidearm
He laughed at our 9mm and 45 commander in our camp when he passed through
He killed that old boar about 4 miles from where I was sleeping up Cut Bank trail on the east side.....a notorious area for big Bruins
I know people in Alaska don’t go out to crap at night without a 44 or 45LC min
That actually is being (or at least has been) done. I saw a prototype on daily planet one time.
Oh good grief, you’re kidding. I was.
Picture a guy riding a bike while trying to brain a charging griz with 500 mag. Pretty funny if you’re not that guy.
Last summer I was biking on a lumber trail and all of a sudden a baby black bear popped out of the bush and was on the trail in front of me...loping along in the same direction I was. He was just a little ahead of me and never saw me coming and I had no chance to slow down. I was afraid the mother would be right behind him so I just put my feet to the pedals and brushed past him... he took a look up at me when I was even with him and with the most frightened look, he peeled off into the bush. Needless to say, it was a long time before I eased up....
Why would being on a horse make you safe from a grizzly?
Well, that proves they aren’t libtards :-)
I was always tell gun carriers to file off the front sight of a gun if they were going into a bad bar.
That way, if someone took it away from them and shoved up their you-no-watt,it would not cut going in and out.
I agree.... it’s one thing to shoot something from a stand and it’s another to shoot something charging that might just shake off a dozen bullets like fleas and keep up on coming. Incidentally, I have an older brother who shot a grizzly in Alaska... they were prospecting in the Panhandle and there was a grizzly that kept bothering their camp.
On my first day of working for the US Forest Service, I saw an older employee walking around with a revolver.
I asked a co-worker if that guy thought he was a gunfighter or something.
Several people told me to shut up and leave the guy alone.
Turns out the guy had been part of a four man crew that was attacked by a grizzly. He was the only one who could still move and went for help. He always carried a pistol after that and no one bothered him about it.
Educate me. Why file the front sight?
Not safe, but safer! A good horse can outrun a bear and do it long enough to get away. So don't take a bad horse into bear country.
So it won’t cut your ass when they stick the gun barrel first up it. It is an old saying.
I love that, I thought it was awesome!
It really made me want to go open Photoshop and begin making a fake poster for the product :-)
LOL, “BearBags”!
“This shows even bears hate bicyclists”
They’re not real fond of joggers, either:

“BearBags”. Beclaws you don’t want to be caught without them.”
