If you're in the market for a Surface 3, now is the time to buy one. Microsoft says that production of the Surface 3 will come to an end in December this year, and warns that stocks are already starting to run low.
It's not yet clear whether the end of production for the cheapest Surface device signals the end of Microsoft's Atom-based devices. But it certainly seems as though the company is keen to focus its attention on the Pro range as well as the Surface Book.
Microsoft confirmed the end of Surface 3 production to ZDNet. Mary Jo Foley speculates that the company could be launching a new batch of Surface devices early in 2017 to coincide with the launch of the next major version of Windows 10 -- dubbed Redstone 2 -- but it's possible that these could appear before that.
In a statement, a Microsoft spokesperson said:
Since launching Surface 3 over a year ago, we have seen strong demand and satisfaction amongst our customers. Inventory is now limited, and by the end of December 2016, we will no longer manufacture Surface 3 devicesThe Surface 3 has been on sale for around 18 months, and represented a cheap way to get on board the Surface bandwagon. Figures released last week show that it is the Pro range of Surface tablets that are now proving more popular, so a decision to drop the non-Pro model would not be entirely surprising.
Didn’t you post this same thing a couple of hours ago? Or is the server having deja vu...
Just the product, or the support for it, as well?
Not for me, but for some folks I know that are into the tablet thing.

It's sold well, customers are satisfied. So, we're going to stop making it.
Love my Surface Pro 4. Best laptop or tablet I’ve ever had.
Yeah, but PC Mag is verboten, and the mod pulled it.
That’s marketing speak for “Poor sales, but we aren’t going to admit it.”
I have not moved to the the Surface 3 or 4 yet because of the larger size. I love my Surface Pro 2 which is much faster than the Surface 3 and an easier size for a tablet.
The Surface line is what Windows 8 was designed for and they really did well with that operating system, not quite so much with 10 although it may be the best of both worlds.
When the Surface Pro 2 is too slow for the software I need I may be in trouble and have to go to a larger Surface.
In this case, it’s code speak for moving people to the 4th generation.
If you buy a surface, get a good amount of memory. There are Bible programs I wanted to run, but I inadvertantly went cheap on the memory and can’t load the program I wanted.
I see what you did there. LOL
Ah, got it. Was thinking I was the one with deja vu!
Zune 2.0
The Surface Pro line is very expensive.
Well, I’m glad I got a Surface 3 when I did. The 4 is too big for my tastes. It does what I want and I’m happy with it.

I like mine. I bought it in the upgraded 128 so that I could run some of the Windows programs I needed. The small size is good. I was not enamored with Win 8.1 that came with it so I let it do the Win 10 upgrade.
Probably MS wants to sell the bigger Pros and dump the smaller ones that are popular.
Anyone else notice that stock price of MS declined most of any after the Brexit?
Go ahead. Enjoy trying to live with a device Microsoft no longer supports.
What is this “Surface 3” thingie and why should/would I care?
