A Delta staffer asked him if hed like to travel home the next day instead, because he was the only passenger on the flight. Delta messed up. I'd have offered him comped tickets and a new free pair of tickets anywhere they fly. They'd have saved money.

Delta probably had to re-position the plane and crew for the next day’s operations so there was no real cost to them except the cabin crew had to keep him in soda and peanuts rather than just flying.

If the plane and crew have to be somewhere, for another flight, the planes got to fly.
Seldom are planes used for single purpose use.

Delta wanted the equipment at the other end for start of business the next day. The plane would have flown empty.

Not if they needed the aircraft at the destination. Airlines will ferry empty planes to locations where they are needed.
