Germany’s Bayerischer Rundfunk reports on the experience of an estate agent with experience selling homes in Hungary’s picturesque Lake Balaton who said the number of “disaffected” Germans seeking property there to escape their own country was on the rise.
Estate agent Ottmar Heide said now eight in ten of his customers were leaving Germany and moving to Hungary because of the migrant crisis, and the potentially millions of non-Europeans who will move to Germany every year. The fact that there is already a large German speaking community around the lake, the country is Christian, property and cost of living is cheap, and there are no “migrants” are all reasons for people choosing to move there, claims the report.

The BEST decision I ever made! For so many reasons. It was tough to leave friends and family and start all over, but it was well worth it.
People here are wonderful - very kind, very polite, probably how things used to be years ago in California before the invasion got out of control. I actually enjoy shopping now and don’t have to get to the stores early to miss the rush of illegals. People will stop and chat in the aisles, as if we’ve been friends all along!
It is drop dead gorgeous here. I am in the Appalachians and I don’t eve miss the tall Sierra peaks with the Giant Sequoias. These mountains have even more beauty. Water is everywhere - rivers, lakes, creeks. I drive by 2 rivers when I go to town, and there’s a creek right along my road. So when we go to the lake, it’s not swamped with people because water is not a big deal to them. Even if it was - the people are so nice, it wouldn’t matter.
My neighbors don’t play music at all hours at full blast - they are pretty considerate! I have to leave the house 10 min early because if I meet someone in the holler, it’s plain rude to drive by without stopping to talk. And NEVER on Sunday do you mow your lawn. The church-going folks will take offense.
Property taxes are amazing - I thought we had a good tax rate due to Prop 8 in CA. But the idiots in Bakersfield kept voting for propositions for bonds. Here, we pay $1100/year for a 2000 sq ft house and 18 acres (there is a greenland exemption for acreages over 10 if you say you don’t be building another dwelling on it).
What part of Tennessee are you looking at? I can send pictures of you’re interesting in the east. I still find it spectacular. And I’m still shocked to find white teenagers mowing lawns, working in restaurants and hotels. Kids are given a chance to learn a work ethic here.
Sounds like heaven! Especially the quiet. I have neighbors who blast that awful mariachi/ranchero/whatever you call it music until 1:00, 2:00 a.m. The traffic is horrendous here. I’m dying to get out. I’m thinking I’ll have to wait another couple of years until I retire, unless I could somehow get a job in another state.
The thought of living with quiet, friendly, considerate, law-abiding, churchgoing, LEGAL folks—Americans—makes my eyes fill with tears. I’ve missed that for so long. It’s a real tragedy how beautiful California has been ruined for all but the very rich.
I’m thinking of Eastern Tennessee. I understand winters are pretty mild there. I’d like having four seasons again, but don’t want to move back to Illinois, where I grew up, and put up with 20-below zero wind chills and five feet of snow, you know?
Part of why I was motivated to move early than I planned was the neighbors - it got to the point where everyone around us had a pool, barking dogs, and if one wasn’t playing loud music, another one was. I hated coming home. That’s a horrible feeling.
Here, I love coming HOME. It is home, a respite from the world. I do hear barking dogs in the distance and gun shots quite often. We’re in the country so it’s to be expected. But more often, I new mooing, goats baahhing, and geese honking. And birds singing in my trees and frogs ribbeting in my pond ;)
I was going to wait 5 years until I had enough money set aside. But problems at work with an unethical boss and the neighbors and the illegals made my decision for me. I can live on little, and living here I feel like I’m living in the lap of luxury. God’s gifts here are free - the mountains, the clean air, the lakes and rivers. I don’t need any entertainment other than a good pair of shoes to walk in ;)
I chose the east too because the temperatures seem to be moderated by the mountains. It is about 5 degrees cooler in the summer and 5 degrees warmer in the winter. I LOVE the 4 seasons! I never had that before in my life and I didn’t know I missed it. The springtime blooms were exquisite - although my nose and eyes didn’t like it much, LOL!

We did the night cruise on the Danube in Budapest, it was beautiful to see those building all lit up.
