Less than 12 hours after her daughter was shot to death on Lake Shore Drive, Diana Mercado wept bitterly outside her family's apartment as she said she'd planned to get her 15-year-old daughter out of Chicago in a year.
"Now they took my baby," she said.
Her daughter, Veronica Lopez, was the youngest of four people killed over the first 24 hours of the Memorial Day weekend.

Why was a 15 yo girl out with a 28 yo man at 1:30 in the morning?
Poor parenting would seem to be the likely answer.
Sure. My teenaged daughters often go out all night with men more than a decade older. Friends, you know.
That’s what I saw too. “Lopez was riding in a Jeep with a 28-year-old man about 1:30 a.m....” Yeah, say no more.
Showing my age here, but I remember back in high school...
There was a guy who was a Senior who was dating a Freshman girl. From the flack he caught over it, you would have thought there was forty years difference rather than four.
My parents would have felt the same way ... although I ended up marrying a man four years older, when I was 22 and he was 26.
Times have changed.
So many tragic events all over the USA
They could get the mother to start an organization telling others to get out.
We had a situation like that here in NJ, Asbury Park, 12 year old girl out on a school night by herself at 10:00pm shot and killed. This is going about ten years. Killer has never been caught.
Good plan lady. Only do us all a favor. Where ever you land, don’t start voting in the same liberal jerks with the same failed policies that have turned Chicago into the kind of place you flee from. Deal?

The society is literally falling apart. Ask anyone born before 1960 if things were ever this bad.
Sanctuary city?
I haven’t been to Chicago in ages, but North Lake Shore Drive was generally pretty upscale. Part of it is referred to as the “Gold Coast,” and heading north of there it leads into upscale Evanston. Not where I’d have thought there’d be drive-bys.
The man is also a documented gang member per the Chicago Police. I'm sure it was harmless
