Drop-tests are always fun to watch, but I’ve always felt that the reliability of most of them is suspect simply because there are so many variables.
Most involve someone dropping a phone by hand, and the distance is often as imprecisely measured as ‘waist height’ or ‘head height,’ making it hard to be sure both phones experienced exactly the same force. Dropping a phone from a hand can result in differences in initial angles, and releasing one side of the phone a fraction of a second before the other can impart a rotation to the device. In short, most drop-tests are more entertainment than science.
But the latest drop-test competition between the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7 is done properly, using professional equipment designed to ensure that both phones are released in exactly the same way from exactly the same height.
Sure, you’d still ideally want to do it a few hundred times and average the results, but that could get a little expensive.
The test also goes a little further than most in that it’s a ‘to the death’ fight: both phones are dropped repeatedly until they are not only cosmetically destroyed, but cease working altogether. I won’t spoil all the fun, but there’s a clear winner …
Pinging ThunderSleeps for the Android List. . . HTC 10 tops iPhone and Galaxy as best drop test survivable phone. . .
The latest Apple/Mac/iOS Pings can be found by searching Keyword "ApplePingList" on FreeRepublic's Search.

Would still rather have a Samsung S7, mainly because I do not drop my phone at all.
I've had Apple multiple iPhones and iPads for nine years and have not broken a single screen. Each of the Apple devices I've owned has retained far more value than any Android device.
More often than not, I see people using phones (all brands) with cracked displays. The smart phone is a fragile device and should be treated as such. My wife and I have owned several vintages of phones and none were damaged. I cannot say the same for my son who seems to be “brain damaged.” He dropped his into the toilet once. Good thing that we had the insurance — one thing about the insurance: they do not replace the unit with a brand new unit but a refurbished unit. So far, no issues.
It is also worth the extra bucks to buy a robust holder/case and the screen protector. It adds weight and size to the phone but it is well worth it.
Just my two cents...
Save you clicking on the article.
Swordmaker only posts articles like this if Apple is considered to be the “winner”. Otherwise he will call it FUD or accuse the writers of rigging the test.
Here is a pro tip: Put a case on your phone REGARDLESS OF COMPANY, and try not to drop it. Both of these phones can break if you do, that is why cases are sold for both of them. Only an idiot buys these devices and doesn’t use a case.
I get my phones for free and have never broken a screen, so I could care less which retains more value.
I just bought an iPhone SE model— it looks like the 5s but has 6s components (mostly). Seems like a fairly solid phone and I put a screen protector on it. My old BlackBerry Curve was a rugged lil device as i dropped that sucker a bunch of times and with some dings but it kept on ticking. We shall see with the SE.
Geez,VDK, you didn't even bother to read his comment. No, the iPhone did not come out "the winner", it was midway between the other two. And Swordmaker lauded this test as being done correctly.
So I'm afraid YOU lose, on both counts. BZZZT!! Play again.
You did manage to get this right, though:
> Put a case on your phone REGARDLESS OF COMPANY, and try not to drop it.
“Geez,VDK, you didn’t even bother to read his comment. No, the iPhone did not come out “the winner””
The article is about “iPhone 6s vs Samsung Galaxy S7”
Which one was the “clear winner” as the article say right there in English.
Apparently you didnt look at the article yourself. The “winner” was some HTC phone, which even the original article omitted because it made Apple look “bad”.
That is why the title is how it is.
“And you only post on Apple threads to
insult people that prefer Apple products.”
Are you insulted? Are you that sensitive?
I would have thought a shoddy article with a misleading premise would have made you “feel” bad.
Nah, just the person pointing it out.
Boy, are you in for it now! Apple advocate Swordmaker will have you Shunned at Apple stores nationwide.
The actual video being reported on does drop tests on two phones, out of SEVEN total that have been done. Now, it happens that because the video tests these two at the same time, the article in the Mac fan mag gets to say the iPhone beat the Galaxy, but SO WHAT -- the video also makes it clear that the HTC is the best of the lot.
So when Swordmaker comments -- correcting the possible misapprehension from the article's title, mind you:
"The Apple iPhone 6S bests the Samsung Galaxy S7 to come in second to the HTC 10"you choose to slur Swordmaker, not the stupid mag??
and
"HTC 10 tops iPhone and Galaxy"
VDK, help me out here. Your comments on our Windows threads are generally great -- informative, often helpful, etc. Yet you seem to have a need to go out of your way to troll Apple threads and slur folks. I don't understand.
But whatever. It's your opinion, you're welcome to it, and it's not my thread. See ya on a Windows thread. :-)
Actually, that’s NOT how to do a drop test. Drop tests are done per IEC 60065, 60068, or 60312. It utilizes a specific piece of equipment that allows a controlled, random orientation drop of a specific height (typically 0.5m, 0.8m, or 1.0m) to a 3mm thick steel plate backed with 19mm of 9 layer void-free plywood, and it’s repeated at regular intervals (2, 3, or 5 seconds between drops) for at least 500 drops.
What you show is a very carefully calibrated and selected test to highlight a potential break in one specific orientation. That’s called cherry picking and gaming the test. It’s meant to be “red meat” to one segment of the phone buying market.
Both the iPhone and the S7 pass the 60068 test fine. At least the ones I saw getting tested passed. Pretty much ALL phones pass the 60065/68/312 set of tests, and those are much more representative of what happens in real life. You can always find an orientation where one phone may be more susceptible to breaking than another; crowing about that cherry-picked result is ignorant at best, deceptive at worst.
“Yet you seem to have a need to go out of your way to troll Apple threads and slur folks. I don’t understand.”
It’s a vanbutthurt-kind of thing. Very emotional and rooted in earl childhood trauma.
In the end, people prefer different phones, just as they prefer different everything.
“you choose to slur Swordmaker, not the stupid mag?? “
There is no “slur”. So far no one has told me that I was wrong, just that I should not say it. I also said this:
“I would have thought a shoddy article with a misleading premise...”
Which is calling out the website.
“Yet you seem to have a need to go out of your way to troll Apple threads and slur folks. “
How many Apple threads have I commented on the past 6 months again? Pointing out bad logic is not a “troll”. Apple people just are overly sensitive to it, and have a bizarre demand to operate in a vacuum where only happy agreement is tolerated. If you dissent, then you = troll.
Of course any Microsoft article is open season for Apple and Linux people, but I realize that it seems to be one set of rules there, and pearl-clutching here if you say something.
“Its a vanbutthurt-kind of thing. Very emotional and rooted in earl childhood trauma.”
Which is a string of nonsense that I suppose is supposed to make me feel bad?
“In the end, people prefer different phones, just as they prefer different everything.”
Do tell?
Nope just tired of it. When I first took a screen name here there was a raging battle going on between Mac and PC users. The only thing worse was the Creation evolution threads.
Get over it Apple is not going away because they sell products that people are willing pay more for. You don't want to pay don't buy Apple but let those of us that are willing to pay more, do so in peace.
I don’t allow trolls to hump my leg.
Not into it, thanks.
