Our local HS has such an allowance.

I am glad to hear that. I'm not sure where I am at.

I was an enlisted Marine and my wife is a retired Marine Officer. It’s funny how all of us Marines agree with the High School.

“Rules are rule...” Interesting statement. Who makes these rules? Those who make the rules can change the rules. This is absolute stupidity!

“But if she showed up in some gay outfit the school would have gone all blubbery over it.”

You’ve got that right. Everything is upside down.

People should read the article. Seven paragraphs down you will find the following: "According to the Northwest Herald, Howerton said in a statement released by the Corps that she was informed of the district’s policy.

"I do not want the controversy that is saturating social media, and I do not want to draw attention away from the class of 2016," Howerton stated. "That being said, it was my choice not to participate in the graduation."

So she had a choice to go with the gown over her uniform or not attend and chose to not attend. End of story.

This is not a military event. The article also said it was fine for the graduate to wear the cap and gown over the uniform, just like if it was a regular civilian clothing. They were even willing to let the graduate wear her uniform top. Bur unless it was outside, she shouldn’t be wearing it anyway unless in military formation with her unit. So, does it make any difference? Not really.

Does everything have to be a dang controversy. The school said no. Why should anyone be able to wear what they want? What about the fireman? The cop? They will have both in the class for sure and some probably leaving for the police academy soon after graduation. Wear the gown and be proud that you are graduating and start your life after. These snowflakes are starting earlier and earlier. What a mess this country is in.

Me to. 24 years in the Navy and I hate graduation wars as much as Christmas wars. All so silly. Snowflakes are spreading like a locus to not just children but entitled parents and adults.

Naps - Hadn’t seen you posting in a while. Good to see you’re back. By the way, I think the term is: “Delicate Little Snowflake!” And yes, they are spreading like a Massachusetts Nor’easter. ; )

What a change from WWII. My dad told me, he and his classmates were allowed to graduate early, in Jan 1942, if they joined the army.

“dress code” violations like this are just a libs way of saying we don’t support your idea. If some muzzie showed up in some kind of muzzie gear, they would be allowed.

Just another incipient radical feminist who deliberately attempted to flout the rules for her own ego and for her 15 minutes of fame.

She is just another snapshot in the album of what our military is becoming infested with under a leftist DC administration....snowflakes, professional victims with causes and gender-freaks.

There is another somewhat subtle premise for the school’s action..... academic precedent or perhaps academic pride. Hoary academic ceremony is at stake.

The gown and the various add on’s that are the marks of academic rank or privilege are pretty much the only way present day academics can show their stuff. The Brits at Oxford wear the gowns when they teach. We Saw obama decked out in a gaudy red gown with colored falderal around his shoulders when delivering a commencement address.

The Marine dress blues are the Marine equivalent. The pope and cardinals all dress up in their fancy miters and uniforms for formal occasions. Police dressup in their blues for such ceremonies, officer and all.

I have a photo with my kindergarten cap and gown at graduation.

Wearing the cap and gown is the only appropriate attire for the accademic ceremony

When my son graduated from a high school here in Oklahoma there were 2 fellow grads wearing their Marine uniforms.

"As a retired USMC Officer here’s my take. “Uniform of the Day” for a hHgh School Graduation is “Cap and Gown” ... period."

As an inactive (long time inactive) Marine I completely agree!
