NYPD checking ammo after knifeman’s jacket stops cops’ bullets

Four of the shots that cops fired at a madman waving a knife in Midtown failed to penetrate his jacket — which was not bullet-proof — and the NYPD will now check the weapons for malfunction, law enforcement sources told The Post.

“The bullets we have may be defective and that’s very disturbing,” one source said. “When we fire our weapons we want to make damn sure that our bullets hit our target – neutralizing our target.”

Maybe the cops just missed their target?

....Maybe the cops just missed their target?

“Another shot grazed the wrist of bystander Lauran Code, a 46-year-old lingerie designer from California.”

This doesn’t come close to the nine bystanders shot by NYC Police as they were shooting at criminals near the Empire State Building in 2012.

I would think that a load so weak it will not penetrate a jacket would also fail to cycle the slide.

Just about all cops now use autos. Did they mention if their guns malfunctioned?

The local county deputies here (MN) carry .40 S&W.

In a major metro area, why would they under power their cops with 9mm?

Probably discount bullets from the lowest bidder.

Russian ammo can be quite cheap. And crap as well. The gasses from their powder formulation can be quite corrosive, and then the powder loads have been known to be a bit on the light side - less velocity = less kinetic energy,

Did they mention if their guns malfunctioned?

According to the article, that is being investigated.

230 grain .45ACP would solve the problem.

How weak a load could those have had?

Police firing guns without the ability to penetrate a windbreaker—that's DeBlasio’s idea of an “effective gun.”

The obvious solution.

DeBlahblah won’t pay for these expensive, effective rounds.

I was wondering the same thing.

BTW, the 9mm is known for penetration. Also the .40 S&W seems to be in decline.

Carhart isn’t a windbreaker. However, a .22 rimfire should be able to penetrate one.

Did the bullet contract recently get transferred to some guy who donated 50K or so to Kaiser Wilhelm?

Cannot be “underpowered”. If so the weapon will not cycle. Don’t forget, it is the powder in the cartridge that generates the energy to push the slide back and eject the spent casing.
No, I suspect the problem is in the hollow point bullets the cartridges are loaded with. My guess is they are fragmenting upon impact with any resistance. That Carhart jacket may have been just enough.
To me, this story makes a good case for ball ammunition. Unjacketed. Give’em lead poisoning.
