AVON PARK (FOX 13) - The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said it has arrested a suspect in the shooting that left an adult and child injured on Saturday.
The victims, one being only 5 years old, were attending a 'Stop the Violence' community event at Aline McWhite Park when they were hit by gunfire around 5:30 p.m.
Deputies said it was a group of men near the park who began firing shots for unknown reasons. People attending the event at the park ran from the gunfire, but the child and a 20-year-old woman were shot.

Irony can be really ironic sometimes.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of shots fired at the Aline McWhite park where a community event was being held.
A large number of children and adults were enjoying a barbecue, raffles, bicycle rodeo, basketball and other events within the fenced area of the park, authorities said.
Nearby, on Fred Connor Street, several black males, some from the Sebring area and some from Avon Park, had gathered, when suddenly gunfire erupted, deputies said.
Numerous rounds were fired and many event attendees “ran in every direction to escape the danger,” a Saturday news release states.

I live in Highlands County. White crime is virtually nonexistent.
Blacks seem to have this need to be festive about the things they do, no matter how nonsensical. An event? That’s like the need for more sex education when what they need is LESS sex.
Why did you shoot those people?
They were being violent.
Okay.
Why anyone would take their child to any such event is beyond me. Events for or against something, no matter how well meaning, tends to be a magnet for violence.
