“The Zika virus has undergone significant genetic changes in the past 70 years,” said the study’s senior author, Genhong Cheng, a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

...

The Zika virus, which was first isolated in 1947, caused sporadic disease in Africa and Asia until the 2007 Micronesia and 2013 French Polynesia outbreaks. Scientists previously believed the infection was spread solely by mosquitoes and caused only by mild disease.

The latest epidemic, however, has been linked to fetal brain-development disorders and Guillain-Barre syndrome. New modes of transmission, including infection through sex, have also surfaced.

“We don’t know why Zika infection was not associated with serious human disease, especially in newborns, until recently,” said co-author Dr. Stephanie Valderramos...

Yet according to Obama we overreacted during ebola scare a couple of years ago.

We absolutely did! And HE named the stupid "czar". Naturally, it was a crony who got his hands on billions of wasted taxdollars.

I believe that office no longer exists. If true, it may be a first.

Climate Change, Inc. sorely wants population reduction. So don’t expect any big medical push to end this disease. Women will be afraid to have babies and will abort infected babies.

Right now this issue in our area N of Gay Frisco is probably under diagnosed and will be under reported. It is not just pregnant women at danger. GBS* has happened with patients with the Zika virus.

In spite of one documented Zika case and sudden GBS* attacks on both a compromised and a uncompromised patients making them unable to swallow for several weeks. Neither of these patients had recent flu shots as a possible cause of their GBS.

A major out patient lab in this area, as of last week, is still not testing for the Zika virus.

look into the 1918 flu. It will happen again and it wasn’t a joke. Modern meds will Have little impact unless you are among the 1%.

It will happen when we pack millions of men together in tight quarters and most people don't have indoor plumbing or observe modern sanitary practices.

I’d say humans have other mutating viruses to worry about more...ie...sexual perversion virus etc.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Scare-of-the-month club. How are those killer bees getting along? Weren’t they supposed to take over the world by now? There are a lot of other ones I could mention, but they don’t seem to have much staying power. We were all supposed to be dead of AIDS by 2000 anyway. Maybe Y2K cured AIDS. Remember what a panic Y2K caused here on FR? I wonder what happened to all the nut-jobs preaching doom here?

Folks called it a type of flu around here. I last had the flu in ‘03 and know what it feels like, this was not the flu.

I came down with sinus problems it went into my chest and the sinus problems went away. I coughed myself awake and just about coughed around the clock. The muscles in my torso became very sore and that phase lasted a month. I took no meds and didn’t go to the doc figuring it would end any time. I am just now getting some of strength back after some months. This started in the the fall of 15 and the weakness lasted from October till March. It was like nothing I have ever had, it didn’t seem natural.
