Sheldon Adelson's Grandfather Was a Welsh Coal Miner???
Self | May 13, 2016 | PJ-Comix

Okay, I'm a big Trump supporter and I am glad that Seldon Adelson ANNOUNCED in the Washington Post that he also supports Trump. However, one line from Adelson's announcement has me really perplexed:

Despite being the grandson of a Welsh coal miner and the son of a Boston cab driver, I’ve had the remarkable experience of being part of almost 50 different businesses in my more than 70-year business career.

A Welsh coal miner? Really? This is as perplexing as if Adelson had announced that he was the grandson of a Samurai warrior.

He sings a mean tenor “Men of Harlech.”

If he was Scottish, it would be Tonkin Golf.

Stranger things have happened. For example, Lefty “Casino” Rosenthal was actually Swedish. Adopted at birth which accounts for his name.

I have Welsh ancestors and they definately were coal miners in the northeastern part of PA. There was plenty of coal mining in the old country too.

Wales ain’t England. Maybe not as hot and bothered as the Scots or the Irish but the Welsh are a pretty tough lot. Certainly not as refined as English.

Another ironic thing is that it was gangster Meyer Lansky who cleaned up casino gambling. Until he came around, it was normal for casino operators to make their money by cheating the customers. Then Lansky realized that the house ultimately wins WITHOUT cheating and strictly enforced that his casinos dispense with cheating the customers. Actually the mob treated the casino customers BETTER than modern day corporate casinos. Like CHEAP casino buffets and top entertainment for very little cost to customers.

Nowadays, the corporate casino bean counters look to squeeze every cent including what I read today about a Las Vegas casino planning to CHARGE for parking space.

BRING BACK THE MOB!!!

Here is the PRICE see the original Rat Pack:

Las Vegas was the Rat Pack's home away from home. They would perform, play golf, party, gamble, and live life in the fast lane every day they were in town. As a group, they filmed 2 movies: Ocean's 11 and Sergeants 3. They took their stage act to the Sands Copa Room and performed to enthusiastic crowds and overwhelming applause. The price of a ticket to see the show, which included dinner and 2 drinks, was $5.95 per person. These guys were cool, they were happening, and they had a chemistry that became legendary.

There is a gulf between being a Tonkin and a miner.

Oh come out and say it. How many Jewish coal miners were there in Wales 100 years ago?

Somewhere between nil and none?

Based on the names in the record, it seems that Adelsons maternal grandpa probably wasn’t Jewish, Tonkin/Tonken apparently being a Cornish/Welsh name.

“(I mean, yeah, I presumed he was Jewish. But you combine the Jewish stereotype for loving diamonds, with the Welsh stereotype of never wanting to pay for someone, and SOME Welsh guy must’ve figured if he got into coal mines, he’d find his own diamond mine.)”

He’s Jewish.

I don't understand what's "perplexing." Americans' ancestors are from everywhere, and every walk of life.

One of my progenitors was a soldier from Kiev. So?

Although rough and dangerous work, coal mining drew eager migrants to Wales, including Jews. For Adelson, having a grandfather who did hard manual work means that his own long, varied, and outstandingly successful business career is all the more remarkable.

This year marks the 50-year anniversary of the Aberfan Disaster which pretty much killed off mining in Wales.

Could "How Green Was My Valley" be considered the first environmental destruction film? The way of life in that Welsh town destroyed by environmental damage caused by coal mining.

BTW, film was originally to be filmed in Wales in color but because of WWII it was filmed in b&w in Malibu because not much green in Malibu.
