Temporary Living in Washington D.C.

Posted on 05/11/2016 6:29:41 PM PDT by Mean Daddy

My son has an opportunity to intern for a Republican congressman for a month or so this summer. Outside of the Universities, what other options are there for temporary (1-2 months) living quarters near the subway? Any and all insight is appreciated. Thank you.

For such a short duration the expectation should be for the experience and not revenue. The cost of such a short term stay will likely eat up any earnings but that is not the point of an internship - it’s about education and connections. Congrats on the opportunity!

Why do you want outside of university housing??? Do you have any idea how dangerous it is in DC?? It is not a safe place.

Your main goal is to find safe housing for your son. Universities are, on average, much safer than regular housing in DC. University dormitories have security. Sure, he won’t be able to bring a six-pack back to his room but he’ll be safer there than in a townhouse over on the Hill.

Well, for corporate housing, that is too low. Maybe he can find a group of interns where he can share the lease. I’ll enclose a link to one of the corporate, short-term housing companies just for info: http://www.oakwood.com/furnished-apartments/US/DC/Washington.html

Thank you and I agree. Based on the stipend, he would be working for free, but the opportunity is a good one. He also got an offer for a Senator but it’s in town and no pay, but I shared from a resume perspective, I would prefer seeing the Senator’s name vs. the congressman.

When I walk into any establishment in Southern Connecticut, the Mortal Kombat theme starts playing in my head.

Rent a bathroom.

He’ll be working in a sewer.

“Capital hill is a cesspool.”

Have you been there lately? Capitol Hill has become Yuppie Heaven, much like the rest of DC. 1000 young, mostly white, recent college grads move into DC each month. The city is now majority white, And young.

You MIGHT, if you shop around and get lucky, find a small townhouse on Capitol Hill’s far reaches for under $1M. Some areas are in transition still, but they are ALL moving in the direction of upscale.

When I go to the residential areas of Capitol Hill there are women pushing strollers, young men and women riding on bikes, houses fixed up, yards tended to ... it’s changed, as has most of DC, over the past 10-20 years. The Metro has opened new residential areas that not long ago were just ghetto. NE and SE are suddenly VERY “in.” Georgetown that fought the Metro tooth and nail has suffered, and is no longer anywhere near the “in” spot it was a generation ago. They had to start a trolley service from Foggy Bottom to get young people to go to G’town.

A couple of years ago (2-3) spouse and I had to meet someone at Columbia Heights, a neighborhood that years ago you’d have driven thru praying you didn’t get a red light. Now, again, it’s full of white yuppies and its cost of living is beyond reach for many people (to wit, ME!). They have all the shops that are normally found in the ‘burbs: Whole Food/Target/Best Buy, etc., etc. and fabulous boutiques and restaurants. It’s become a “happenin’ place.”

I looked for my daughter who is also interning in DC this summer.
AirBNB had some good options but it’s not cheap. Ended up at GW in a shared apartment with several other young ladies. Will cost me more to pay for the rent then she will earn this summer.

That’s what we’re finding out too, but you want to give them the opportunities.

So basically 5 weeks, including Memorial Day and Independence Day. $2K isn’t a bad stipend for such a short time, and that’s now why they take these internships. He can get better paying work for the rest of the summer.

There are apartment buildings on Capitol Hill that offer sort term rentals. But, I’d be inclined to go to GWU, it’s close to everything; the Metro that stops there stops on the House side of the Capitol. And there is the security factor for a young student.

But I would take all the “DC is a sewer” talk on here with a massive grain of salt. If a person is fairly savvy and stays in the downtown/Capitol Hill/Foggy Bottom/Georgetown/Dupont Circle/Woodley Park areas, s/he should be fine. That’s more than enough turf for his short stint.

Your son will met and socialize with other interns, as well as other young people if he’s on a campus. DC has become a young people’s city. It has a lot to offer. He would have to have some situational awareness, not trust everyone, etc., but that’s true of every city, and a lot of small towns.

There are no guarantees of safety in DC or elsewhere, but unless he wants (and you want for him) to spend the rest of his life living in your basement, he should seize this opportunity with gusto. It will be over in the wink of an eye.

Good luck to him.

Our son did that (not exactly, but close). We lived in Bel Air, MD., and he took the train - worked out well for a short time. Any where on the line would work.

Unfortunately GWU is booked already plus a couple of the other universities. Looking for non-traditional ideas short of trusting Craigslist. He’s investigated most of the “intern” sites, hence my post. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Sorry, but what did your son do? I’m assuming he didn’t live at home due to the commute time. Yes, we would want it near the line as well.

A young relative commutes from Richmond Va suburb to DC to work.

That is over 100 miles each way. Can't imagine. I'm 50 miles closer to DC and it's a rough commute for my neighbors who work in the city.

My daughter did the same thing 15 years ago. She stayed at gallaudet university. It is a school for deaf and hard of hearing. My daughter found a bonus, the place was nice and quiet. She is not hard of hearing by the way

I’m thinking...Marymount University is just across the river and on Orange Line, I think.

Contact Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR and ask if anyone will take a boarder? Crystal City and other areas near National airport?

How about a private email to a DC Freeper you may know or posting this question on the DC area Freepers Page?

I am hesitant to give you names here.

Daughter Ivanka is so smart...she bought the building across the street and will be able to charge less and still have access to areas like gym/pool/restaurants? ..no wonder they make so much money!!

I bet they are working “double time” to have some of it open by the first of the year. He is always ahead of schedule, but I don’t know what that was.

The Congressman’s office should help with this.
