Yeah I was thinking another $500 for ammo might just bring down my house of cards lol.

“the early ones came out with the 289 “
and I think an Italian transmission that usually broke. That was when John Wyer was running the show at first.
Then Carroll Shelby took over.

Back in the day I had a '65 Stang conv. with the 289 A-code motor (225 hp). Very reliable, and had plenty of git-up-and-go. But the 289 engine option to have was the K-code (271 hp), which was the one Shelby put in the (very light) Cobra. The K-code also had solid lifters and a higher compression ratio.
Those mid-'60s Fairlanes were great cars.

I’d like to try on a nice ‘64 Galaxie 2-door someday.

The early ones came out with the 289 but they went to the side oiler NASCAR 427 and it is the gt40 that won the first of many Le Mans, as well as others, races for Ford. That's the way I remember it. Mk I cars = 289, Mk II cars = 427 (mostly for the extra speed down the Mulsanne Straight).

I had a ‘64 Fairlane with a 260. It got about 12 miles to the gallon. I think it was advertised that it got 14 mpg. But gas was only 25 cents a gallon. There were many times I’d get 50 cents worth, as we used to say.
Had a friend who had a ‘67 Comet Caliente with a 289. He could make the left from wheel come off the ground a few inches when he popped the clutch.

25 cents a gallon is inflation adjusted $1.78 today.
So if you add in the state & fed road tax increases since then, it’s right about what we’re paying now.

Wow, I just saw two of them yesterday, no kidding. Local car dealer owns them, houses them in a museum here, open one day a year.
There were a couple of others outside, they were doing a charity car show.
That was an overwhelming experience, what a lot of cool old iron.

that does not look like a GT-40. That looks more like a Porsche 917.
