Against the Dangerous Myth that the GOP Has ‘Given Obama Everything He Wanted’
National Review ^ | May 6, 2016 | CHARLES C. W. COOKE

...

The Republican party is an imperfect vehicle and it has, of course, made mistakes. But the idea that it hasn’t effectively and consistently opposed President Obama’s agenda is little more than a dangerous and ignorant fiction. Had the GOP not been standing in the way — both from 2008, when it was in the minority everywhere, and from 2010, when it regained the House — the United States would look dramatically different than it does today. Without the GOP manning the barricades, Obamacare could well have been single payer, and, at the very least, the law would have included a “public option.” Without the GOP manning the barricades, we’d have seen a carbon tax or cap-and-trade — or both. Without the GOP manning the barricades, we’d have got union card check, and possibly an amendment to Taft-Hartley that removed from the states their power to pass “right to work” exemptions. Without the GOP standing in the way, we’d now have an “assault weapons” ban, magazine limits, background checks on all private sales, and a de facto national gun registry. And without the GOP standing in the way in the House, we’d have got the very amnesty that the Trump people so fear (it’s fine to oppose Marco Rubio for his support for the “Gang of 8″ bill, but it’s not fine to pretend that it didn’t matter that the Republicans ran the House when the reform bill left the Senate; it did).

So now National Review wants to pretend the GOP wasn't complicit in the Obama regime? Tell me something National Review, what did CONSERVATIVES do to STOP the passing of the latest $1 TRILLION budget?

Where were conservatives on executive actions? Where were they on the repeal of Obamacare? Reigning in the IRS, EPA, DOE, or DOJ? Where were they in holding in contempt Lois Lerner?

CONSERVATIVES AND THE GOP DESERVE EVERY BIT OF ANGER AND CONTEMPT DIRECTED THEIR WAY!

Now Charlie Cooke wants us to stop the narrative that is based in reality. Screw off Cooke.

The GOPe didn't give Obama everything they wanted. He wanted them to call him Daddy. Instead they just said "uncle!"

Who are you going to believe??? Me, or your lying eyes????

I am astounded that the author of this steaming pile would actually expect ANYONE to buy it. Whatta load.

The GOP did not stand up for anything in the last 8 years.

Most of those things didn’t happen because they didn’t have support on the Democratic side either. If Obama wanted it and it had minimal support, he got his way.

And let’s face it, most of the morons at NR and WS kept telling everyone that whatever it was, it wasn’t the hill to fight on, if they weren’t actively cheerleading for it.

"Without the GOP manning the barricades, . . ."

Manning barricades my aunt Fanny.

They were busy running in packs and picking the pockets of the people Obama policies left lying on the ground after being economically raped and left for dead.

Pontificate about a hot button here, read a children's book on the Senate floor there, ignore Obama violating the Constitution while rubber stamping his budget, then back to stripping the corpses, that's what most of the "brave Conservatives" have been up to.

While working people circle the drain in this country and unemployment explodes, I haven't seen any charts showing the sad decline of wealth and income for Congress Critters, has anyone else?

After years of voting ‘rat, I became a republican around 1993. One of the first things I did was take out a subscription to National Review. It’s been years since I’ve read a copy. The only thing it’s good for now is to hang in outhouses.

this si the kind of bull$hit that they actually believe. After kissing Obama’s rear for his whole term they want us to believe that what happened didn’t really happen. The whine now is that woe is us, the “true conservatives.” The stupid asses can’t see that they are the ones that made it possible for Trump to exist.

They are so afraid that their clique will be severely damaged by someone revealing all the corruption they created. The cry now is that Trump cannot win against a lying, thief running on a Socialist ticket. Too bad the people have finally figured out that Washington is a cesspool inhabited by venal slimy individuals that are there for their interests alone.

Manning the barricades and going on the offensive would have been much better. We would be light years away from Obama by now. Secretly, many Rinos are still desiring the Obama agenda.

The author's weakest point -

Without the GOPe standing in the way, the newly elected Tea Party candidates could have accomplished a lot more of people's mandates.

Cannot fix what your stubbornly arrogantly refuse to see is broken GOPE. This idiot notion that you can continue to run on “well they are worse” again in 2016, like you did in 2008 and 2012, is the dangerously ignorant notion here.
