A newly minted McLaren owner in England became a little over-excited following the delivery of his brand-new supercar. Telegraph reports that the owner of a McLaren 650S stuffed the coupe into a tree just 10 minutes after the car arrived at his house for the first time.
The report states that neighbors spotted the owner celebrating supercar ownership with a bottle of champagne right after the car arrived at his doorstep. Not 10 minutes later, the owner introduced the front end of his $265,000 supercar to the ever-sturdy trunk of an innocent tree. The collision was severe enough to demolish the front end of the car, scattering bits of the carbon fiber bodywork all over the immediate area.
While it isn’t easy to sympathize with the owner, it is simple to understand how the driver lost control. With a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine sending 641 hp and 500 lb-ft to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the 650S scampers to 62 mph in a chest-compressing 3 seconds, and on to a top speed of 207 mph. These are not performance figures of a forgiving and easy-to-manage car.
Essex police are not completely sure on the identity of the driver who was piloting the car at the time, and are still conducting an investigation.

With all the power it has under the hood, just a tap on that gas pedal would have brought him close to 100 MPH.

$2.5 million and it comes with a grill that doesn’t match? I suppose the four turbochargers helping it achieve its 288 mph top speed outweigh using a recycled shopping cart for the grill.

Years ago, I drove my cargo van over a small hill to find a stopped school bus ahead of me with its flashing lights on letting children off after school. As I sat there waiting I noticed a car coming up over the hill behind me rather quickly. This was in a 45mph speed limit area, so most people would do between 50-55. Watching in my rearview mirror, I could see the car wasn’t slowing down, so I put both feet on the brake and braced myself for the impending impact..... Blam!!! Got out of the van and walked back to see if the driver was alright and survey the damage. He was fine, but the same couldn’t be said of his brand new Cadillac. My van wasn’t too bad off, bent bumper, rear door, and from then on that van always drove down the road a bit sideways, lol. The whole front end of the Cadillac was pushed halfway back to the windshield. The driver was VERY bummed out. He had literally just bought it, and was driving it home from the dealership!
On another note, this was a perfect example of why it’s good to stay back from a school bus while it’s loading or unloading. Even with me having the brakes fully locked, the impact of the Cadillac skidded me forward quite a ways.

When I was a kid (17) I had a neighbor who ran an auto importing business. He dealt a lot in BMW’s and Mercedes but also brought in some exotic cars like the Maserati Citroen, Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s.
We lived south of Seattle and his lot was north of Seattle so when he would take delivery of cars we would have to transport them. I mostly drove the “chase car” but occasionally I got to drive the new cars. It gave me an opportunity to drive some machines that I would never have otherwise been afforded the opportunity to touch.
