The Link Between Mosquito Spraying and Autism
Time ^ | April 30, 2016 | Alexandra Sifferlin

A new study suggests a connection between the two

A new study finds a correlation between the aerial spraying of pesticides to kill mosquitoes and an increased risk of developmental delays and autism among kids.

In the new findings, presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies 2016 meeting, researchers looked at the rates of autism and developmental delays from eight zip codes in a region of New York that is exposed to yearly airplane pesticide spraying to prevent mosquito-borne disease like eastern equine encephalitis virus. They compared those to the rates in 16 zip codes where the pesticide spraying doesn’t happen. (Other forms of pesticide spraying could still occur, like manual spreading.) They controlled for factors like poverty and gender variation across the zip codes.

The authors report that kids living in zip codes where the spraying was done each summer had around a 25% higher risk of an autism diagnosis or developmental problem compared to kids living in areas without the aerial spraying. “Several studies have previously reported links between pesticide and autism risk,” says Dr. Steve Hicks, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine in an email to TIME. “Our data suggests the way in which pesticides are applied might play some role. Studies of pesticides in animal models show they can affect certain neurotransmitters in the brain, but their exact molecular effects on brain development are still being explored.”

The study only shows a correlation between the two and does not show that aerial pesticide spraying causes autism.

My daughter has three girls. She NEVER lets them get multiple series vaccination shots for ANYTHING. If it is mandated, then it is just one shot at a time over how many weeks it takes to meet the requirement.

“I am not buying it. Pesticides are always #1 on the greenies list of bad stuff. The ban on DDT is now responsible for deaths of countless millions of people in 3rd world countries. It is still the greatest pesticide ever conceived. It is truly is less toxic than aspirin to people yet it is the one of the most vilified compounds in history.

Worth repeating. Toss in the Ozone Hole and the hairspray propellant CFC. The greenies/liberals demanded we ban the stuff, we did, yet the Ozone Hole is still there.

I recall a study that correlated the deployment of cable TV with incidence of autism neighborhood by neighborhood.

TV used as a babysitter.....rewiring young brains.

“I remember in the early 60s on an AF base overseas them spraying the housing areas with DDT trucks several times a week. Heavy fog. I even got caught in it riding my bicycle more than once. I have yet to see a positive long term assessment of the ills of DDT vs use benefits against multiple insect borne diseases.”

Same here. Turkey, 1971-1972. They sprayed like crazy. No autism in anyone I know from there.

They’re just gonn’a keep trying to find SOMETHING that they can “blame” to keep from admitting, it is God’s will.

“There is SOMETHING causing all these neurodegenerative disorders in our children and elderly at unprecedented rates. “

Or, possibly, they were there all along but we can now identify them. So, suddenly the statistics reflecting their presence have shot through the roof. We don’t see what we aren’t looking for.

I salute you. At least the kids get vaccinated.

My medical training makes me want to yell at anti-vaxxers.

DDT was never an autism thing, it was a birth defect thing.

If you eat too much salt your arteries will harden and you will die; if you eat pepper it will lodge in your kidneys and you will die; etc

The more plausible cause is all the antidepressants and other drugs women now take for years, sometimes during pregnancy.

I agree with your premise about the positive aspects of pesticides, but I am also very concerned about the effects of agents that have known neurotoxic effects. Children should not be exposed to organophosphates.

God’s will, yes. The diversity of the individual human being. It seems so many things are the random diversity of existence...

I do however wonder about suggestion that perhaps there is a viral connection. Yet I know parents with more then one child with autism which makes it seem like there is more to it. I wonder about fathers taking hot baths ... However. It does seem to be just another form of nature’s or natural diversity, which is unfair ...

Ditto here too...In South Jersey, we grew ‘em big. Clouds of them.

Funny, we did not have issues with autism nor adhd.

Child behavior is more affected by things like divorce and negligent parenting than any spray or vaccine.

Also, supposedly medical diagnoses are too heavily influenced by parents wanting more government handouts. Doctors declare the children disabled in some way so single Mommy can get a bigger Uncle Sam check.

I noticed how there was a huge surge in asthma diagnoses about 10 - 15 years ago, which is now no longer a big thing. I’m guessing it had nothing to do with chemicals in the environment.

The article states that the pesticides were still spread in the areas not covered by airplanes. So the study seems to be trying to blame autism on low flying airplanes? Stupid.

There will always be room for 'wonder' for we are "fearfully and wonderfully made"

I just think there is too much "invented life", meaning to say;

There are only so many computer programs (we need) ... to write ..
so many medical researchers we 'need' to employ/grant money to ...
so many weapons needed to kill a man or men ...

As I get older and simpler (in mind, desires and needs .. ), I see this thing called 'life' so very simply and uncomplicated

Probably the biggest complications to Americans is the need for a job that takes too much of our time (because of bad programming to "need" the latest .. etc. .. )

... and a mortgage that takes too much of the money we trade so (too) many hours for

Those two elements alone rob man of precious human experience we USED TO enjoy without becoming a soccer mom or super dad

I think the dirty little secret of the Autism and Aspergers increase is the prevalent use of anti-depressants in women. Our son has a mild form of both and my wife was on anti-depressant medication while pregnant. Her doctor instructed her to not stop taking it during her pregnancy.

I think all of these articles pointing the finger away from pharma is a planned effort to distract us from the real cause. The truth would destroy the pharmaceutical industry as they make tons of money with these medications.
