The dog, named Maxx, helped crews navigate through thick smoke to find the 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl

A German shepherd helped firefighters find his owners' two young children as flames ripped through the family's central Florida home, authorities said.

The dog, named Maxx, helped crews navigate through thick smoke to find the 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl Monday night in their burning home in the Orlando suburb of Longwood, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Moments earlier, neighbors who saw the fire spreading called 911, broke windows and helped rescue the children's mother, Margo Feaser, a 12-year veteran of the sheriff's office who currently serves as an auto theft investigator.

Would be great if I wasn’t allergic to dogs so I can play with them.

German Shepherds are such smart dogs. No surprise they are life savers, too.

Just last night my Jack Russell refused to come to bed. She spent hours softly growling at the front and side doors.
Extremely unusual for her.

Dogs are very territorial and very protective of their people.
Shepherds take that to a much higher level.

Maxx earned every dime ever spent on his feeding and housing and deserves extra loving for the rest of his life.
I bet that’ll be one pampered pooch.

Great story, saw a similar one about this German Shepherd posted yesterday. I said that as a German Shepherd breeder, I’m glad the breed is getting some positive press since it seems lately so many people are thinking German Shepherds are just big, mean attack dogs anymore. They can be such good dogs if raised and trained properly. SNot many people remember Rin Tin Tin either...

Here's my big boy, he's 145 pounds and will be 11 in less than 3 weeks. At the time of this pic, my husband was sick and Ash was gently holding hands with him in concern. Such compassionate, loyal dogs!

Good for those dog, and it is also good to see lately that the German Shepherd is not being mixed as much as it used to be and now returning to t be good, solid, big boned dogs.

They were never mixed with anything, but the show dogs still look as crippled as ever. There was a stink regarding the Crufts best of breed winner this year, her back looked broken:

My dogs are considered old fashioned style German Shepherds which have the straight back. Mine also tend to be larger in size than standard, but extremely healthy.

The back is awful. I have had my Belgian Shepherds in shows too, but they never seem to win Westminster.

I have also had German Shepherds and plan next time to get two as family dogs.

My 2 year old GSD back is straight and weighs 95 lbs. He is beautiful. Why would anyone breed them with their back shortened? It looks deformed.

This dog is gorgeous, but I’m betting he’s still German Show lines mostly. (Candid pix can fool the viewer.)

They are not “mixed”, there are several types (unless you mean the Shiloh/King oversized dogs which have been accused of being part Malamute, etc) that have arisen from same stock. Unfortunately, none of them is perfect.

This is a German Show line type.

I hate their roach backs. It’s not good for trotting, it’s for galloping - generally only greyhound types have roached backs.

True, I was more referring to the Germans Shepherds we see which are bred with labs, or other kinds of dogs.
Though that Shiloh are massive , but the ones I have come across do have a nice temperament.

The breeders in Belgian Tervurens are trying very hard to protect that breed from going the way of being mixed.

There is a breeders near me who breeds German Shepherds and when I asked to see the papers as I was interested in buying a couple he refused to show me papers and I found out he has been inter breeding.

I do want another two now my dog has recently died, and it will be a German Shepeherd as great as Belgian Tervurens/shepherds are they are also connect with the Alpha person of the family i.e.me which pisses me wife off LOL.

You are right...this dog probably stemmed from German show lines, but some of the Czech working lines are starting to look this way, though not as extreme. There are Shiloh Shepherds and King Shepherds that are mixed with Malamute and other things (and also don’t claim to be GSD because of this, they cannot have AKC papers if they are crossbred), like you mentioned...but you can have breeders that have larger dogs that are completely purebred, that is the GSD part of where those Shilohs and Kings stemmed from. My dogs are purebred German Shepherds but are larger, completely originating from German Shepherds in origin, but are much more moderate in angulation than either the American or German show types.

I will say that, as a breeder, when someone is trying to breed for consistency, they are going to probably try to linebreed because they are working towards a certain goal - the epitome of the perfect dog, in their eyes. Linebreeding is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if they are doubling up on a particularly good dog. Most breeds were created through linebreeding and inbreeding, and of course you can have issues pop up, but even when you outcross from one line to another, that can unfortunately happen as well. With Shilohs, they unfortunately have had many issues, but that’s probably another post for another time, lol.
