The Times has learned that Reginald, the greyhound that was attacked in a recent incident has passed away.

A mixed breed pit bull jumped out of a vehicle from the parking lot of the Bodine’s Market on South Main Street, attacking both Reginald and his owner Lisa Matthaeus.

Reggie suffered deep gashes to both sides of his neck. The skin on both of his legs was taken completely off. Lisa was also injured trying to intervene, suffering broken fingers and a severed tendon.

“Reggie” was a retired Greyhound racer who was adopted by the Matthaeus family.

The attacking dog, Rocky, was seized and ordered to be put down.

Yes and he should never have been the one shown the door

Wow... lol. Okay. A horse is a wild animal and can be unpredictable too. They have been known to throw people off. So..... no more ranches with horses? Here in Texas we love our horses, so that’d really stink.

Thanks, good advice. We're extremely vigilant around her, and my grandson knows to be gentle around his dogs.

He's used to physical contact, loves playing football with his older cousins. He was a terror in soccer, not hesitating to run over/through his opposition when the opportunity arose. Finesse will enter his game as he continues to play (I hope...lol).

“Irresponsible owners are reprehensible, responsible owners are none of your business.”

Actually, they are. Ive never seen the neighbors 38 revolver escape its place in the drawer and run outside to attack kids in the street. Pits do it a lot. And the “game” is that every time it happens, the owner is said to be “irresponsible”.
But the fact is unless by responsible you mean keeping that pit in a backyard zoo type enclosure, they can and will escape sometime.

Those things are a menace, and even ones owned by responsible people do a lot of damage.

I was real nervous when my brother brought my nephews over to visit.

I had Isis for about 2 years at the time, and I knew her pretty well, but I was afraid of what the boys might do, you never know with a 3 and a 4 year old.

They were here for about 5 days, no trouble, they loved Isis, but I could tell that the children were stressing her out.

On the fourth day or so, Isis was looking out the back door for squirrels, and Christopher, the three year old, decided he was going to run up behind her and pull her tail.

You could just see the decision process occur on his face as he watched her tail wag, and then off he went to go pull. You could sort of even see a bit of deviousness on his face when he started the move.

I was sitting watching this so I was able to jump up and intercept him before he got to her tail, but that is the type of thing that worries me about young children being around large dogs.

They don’t know any better and even just a childish sort of prank could lead to disaster.

They are freaks, but very sweet freaks. We’ve had ours a year now. Very pleasant dog to live with and when she runs full out at the dog park it is a sight to see. They are built for speed—all muscle, no fat and very thin (can be transparent in places) skin which is likely why the greyhound in the story suffered such fatal injuries. They’re built to run, not to fight.

Gun grabbers will point out that plenty of weapons have fallen into the hands of children and criminals, and that is one reason why they should have a say in your gun ownership.

If one believes in personal freedom and personal responsibility one should be extremely reluctant to take freedom from others based on what could happen.

I walk in a public park nearby and, sure enough, was confronted by a pit bull, off leash, when I rounded a corner. Thankfully, I wasn't attacked. The owner, a typical libtard who fancied herself as able to control the beast, took pains to tell me that they had spent $2,000 on obedience lessons for the mutt.

I now carry a .38 special and pepper spray, and am quite ready to use either if necessary.

Pre-pit, it was the Rottweiler. Before that, it was the Doberman and before that it was the German Shepherd that was feared.

I grew up in the 80’s. I grew up wary of Rots and people who owned Dobermans were suspect.

I had an Aussie who was a gentle, loving family pet. We had her for years.

Out of nowhere, she killed my grandmothers Maltese.

This dog had been around kids and farm animals her whole life. She was trusted with poultry and cats and baby goats. We never had a problem with her -

- until the day we did.

*Any* dog can turn predator in an instant.

Honestly, I find it frustrating that people are so focused on breed. It makes us forget that canines are, at their heart, hunters and killers.

I love dogs with all my heart, but I don’t forget their basic nature.

Well.....I’ve studied the history of American dog-fighting.
Back when it was more of a gentlemen’s game, dogs would face death from dehydration. Dogs would latch on and push and shove until the owners needed to break them up to give them IVs. The New World version seems to favor blood and gore.

Guns never attack on their own. Pits do. They do it almost daily. They do it despite the best efforts of their owners.
Animals that are a dangerous risk -when- they escape are widely restricted.
Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Mamba snakes, Cobras, Piranhas, the list is long and Pit Bulls and their very similar cousins and mixes have a well earned place on the list.

I have heard that grey hounds are very sweet dogs, but I’ve not ever met one up close.

My brother adopted two retired racers.

As with pit-bulls it's all about selective breeding.

In the case of pit-bulls, aggression is a desired trait. With greyhounds, it's just the opposite. They want dogs with strong prey-drive so they want to chase the rabbit, but they also want dogs with weak aggression to other dogs.

Unlike most other breeds, greyhounds are socialized early in life to be non-aggressive to other dogs and humans. Consequently, they make terrible guard dogs as they are completely non-territorial. Most dogs will bark when someone knocks at the door, or rings the door bell, or if a stranger walks into their house or yard. Greyhounds will simply walk up and want to be petted.

I know a guy that walks 3 of them . He’s constantly yelling at them. Flat out on a track is different than walking at heel.

Greyhounds can be trained to walk at heel. As with aggressive pit-bulls do you blame the dog or the owner?

As I say, my brother owned two and they walk at his side with slack leashes. But, he's made it clear to the dogs that he's the leader, not them. It sounds like the guy with 3 lets the dogs run amok.

I’m sure you’d agree it would be small consolation to someone who loses a beloved pet or child to a pit bull.

I like dogs, guns, but maybe there should be restrictions on certain breeds, just as I can’t keep a tiger in my house, without special licensing.

It has been a while since I heard of a rampaging golden retriever or standard poodle.

use to have a neighbor that owned a oversize white Shepard. He met everyone at the door and got the smell test then go to his bed to nap...You had to know how to approach this dog. Yet once you passed the smell test, he was a sweet dog. They came home one night and found blood over the kitchen and living room. The side door was broken into. Lots of blood but the dog was sleeping in his bed, he also had some blood on him, it wasn't his. Dog never attempted to leave the house, but a couple or just one teen wont be returning to that house........Neighbors were all giving the owners the high 5. A few neighbors had been broken into.

This happened in NYS. She probably couldn’t have gotten a permit if she wanted one.
