Dogs Hate Hugs, Study Suggests

If you love your dogs, you should hug them, right?

Wrong.

In an article published in Psychology Today, psychology professor and neuropsychological researcher Stanley Coren argues that most dogs are actually stressed out by hugs.

The study analyzed 250 Internet photos of people hugging their dogs, scanning for for known signs of anxiety in the dog, including turning their head away, showing the whites of the eyes and slicked back ears.

Coren's data revealed that 82 percent of dogs in the photos showed at least one of those signs of stress. About 8 percent of dogs seemed happy with the hug and the remaining 10 percent appeared neutral or showed an ambiguous response toward the gesture.

That picture looks like my husband and one of our dogs, Cookie. I think I even have a quilt like that one.

Kitties love shoulder rubs, too. One of our cats can’t have her face and head rubbed enough and strenuously, too. The guy will allow one finger occasionally along his nose. He loves his chest and chin being rubbed, but she doesn’t. When you hold him while standing, he stiff-legs you to get as far away as possible. He does like being cradled on his back. She, on the other hand, will NOT let you hold her on her back. But she’ll drape over your forearm and let you pet her.

Two kitties as different as day and night.

Don’t get me started on the dog...

And humans don’t like having their crotches sniffed. So we’re even.

Then somebody should tell my dog to stop waking me in the morning by slobbering all over my face.

Our Samspon went over the rainbow bridge seven years ago and I still miss him. We rescued all 150 pounds of him through the American Bullmastiff Association. He was a cuddler, again, all 150 pounds of him! I’ll never forget trying to find ways to keep him off of the furniture. Somebody told us to put newspapers on the couch because the sound annoys them. We came home that evening to find him snoring on the couch, under the newspapers, like a homeless person.
