RNC chair Priebus: Our platform is clear that “life begins at conception”

On Sunday, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus dismissed speculation that Donald Trump’s recent comments about changing the GOP platform’s abortion plank would lead to any actual changes.

Last week, the businessman and GOP presidential candidate said he would “absolutely” favor amending the platform’s declaration “that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed” to make exceptions for rape, incest, and life-of-the-mother cases.

But on ABC’s “This Week,” Priebus noted that convention delegates, not the candidates, have the final say over any alterations to the party platform. “If that’s what Donald Trump is intending, then he needs to make sure that the people that agree with him are the people that are getting elected to the platform committee,” he said.

“I think our platform is pretty clear on those subjects. Life begins at conception, and that 14th Amendment rights apply to unborn children,” Priebus continued. “And I would suspect that that is what the platform is going to say after Cleveland.”

Trump’s own official campaign position is pro-life with those exceptions, but the GOP platform does not prevent incremental legislation containing those exceptions. Of his remaining primary competitors, Ohio Governor John Kasich also supports those exceptions, but Texas Senator Ted Cruz supports only an exception to save a mother’s life.

Cruz has always supported “life of the mother” as an exception. But IIRC, the interpretation is verrrrrry broad.

To be fair they all did!

Dr Bernard Natanson, may he rest in peace, was once an abortionist but became pro life. Remember “The Silent Scream”? He said abortion never “saves a woman’s life”. If need be they induce labor or give a C section, or the rare occasion of ectopic pregnancy, which clinics can’t do, but ripping the baby limb from limp is not saving the woman!

I think that it is the “HEALTH of the mother” that had very broad interpretation.

it’s amazing how the dems say they want gun control but they really mean all guns banned.

too bad we’re not as bright.

if we lost NO babies are helped, and there is no help on the way for at least four more years for them.

“I think our platform is pretty clear on those subjects. Life begins at conception, and that 14th Amendment rights apply to unborn children,”

Trump says: "Huh? I don't understand. What does this have to do with bankruptcy laws and eminent domain?
And what is this "14th Amendment" thing - 14th Amendment to what?"

As long as there are doctors who don’t take their Hippocratic oaths seriously, that can always be interpreted broadly, because it will always fall to the doctors to determine if a woman’s life is threatened. Just like you can always find a doctor to write you a “medical marijuana” prescription (for a price), you will always be able to find a doctor who will say your life is threatened by a pregnancy (for a price).

Actually, since all the abortion laws are at the state level, the Presidential race only impacts this issue tangentially (like the fight to defund Planned Parenthood).

A new, individual life begins at conception, and it is human.

Yawn. He’s just saying this as RINOs always do during the election cycle. Afterwards it’s back to baby slaughter and the Cheap Labor Express business as usual. Far fewer conservatives are falling for this treacherous crap any longer.

Good for Reince. The platform needs to stay the way it is. I disagree with Trump in this case.

All the women relying on "oral contraceptives" must have missed the memo as well in spite of the information on the product being available to them.

If life begins at conception than all those pills that keep a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the womb are no different than an invasive procedure that takes the life of the infant other than being more discrete.

Saying life begins at conception while ignoring the murders that are done quietly with accepted chemical means is pure hypocrisy.

I would never tell a woman that has been raped and brutalized and become pregnant to carry that psychos baby, passing on the Scumbag’s horrible genes, and reliving that trauma everyday. It is not the baby's fault nor the mother's fault. Who are we to play God? If we do not have an exception, how would a woman raped and beaten and in the hospital have a procedure just after conception? This has been in the platform that nobody ever pays any attention to. We have to be smarter about this, but stop trying to live people's life instead of them.

“Who are we to play God?”

If you don’t want to play God, then you would let nature take its course, and that baby would be born.
