Nine years ago most people had the flip phones which required pushing the buttons multiple times to get to some letters. No wonder the girl wrecked.
Her poor mother.
Not to change the subject to terrible drivers, but I’ve noticed (as have others I’ve spoken to) that Texans don’t know how to merge. A Texan trying to merge while on the phone...? I can imagine the trouble & danger that would cause.
Where did she get the phone? That is the root of the problem, I think.
That's called the "iPause".
If I get a text alert, I ignore it.
I think it’s the ubiquity that’s really causing it. Cellphones are everywhere, and texting is one of their primary uses, and these accidents are happening a lot.
I was fortunate to have worked for a company that ENFORCED Defensive Driving. It was given to all employees who ‘might ever’
drive in a company vehicle. There was a one week course every five years an a two day refresher every year.
A couple of notes: All other drives are liable to do the unsuspected moves, Do not trust the other to do the correct thing and never do anything but drive-alert when driving a vehicle.
My family doesn’t enjoy when I am driving because I talk aloud about moves that other drivers are about to do. Most times Im right.
No tickets or accidents since 1958.
The technology must exist to have the option of making cell phones inoperable when the vehicle is moving....
texting is impossible while driving. One can feasibly talk on a phone while driving, because one can keep one’s eyes on the road.
With texting, it is impossible. I see it with my kids and their friends. They are slaves to their devices. I am constantly railing against it.
I feel bad for the other driver.
Actually, texting is the worst of the distractions.
Why are they doing that while DRIVING?
My personal opinion (never to be confused with that of anyone who matters) is that we have made driving cars too easy. Back when you had to shift gears manually you had to pay attention.
I can’t spell and drive at the same time
.
Although my oldest daughter is a good driver now she had a very shaky start. I don’t know if it was lack of confidence or too many distractions (or both) but she even though she paid attention she wasn’t paying enough attention. She ended up rear-ending someone (slow speed, little damage) that was her wake-up call.
I told her that I didn’t GAD if it took longer for her to get anyplace than her friends - I was adamant that she arrive intact.
I know about the siren-call of cellphones and I’ve been tempted a time or two to answer it but I built a habit pattern to ignore it until I can be off the road.
I saw the same - a guy in heavy stop n go traffic with the paper spread out on his steering wheel. I yelled at him but he just rolled his eyes and ignored me.
Scares me more when I see them rolling up behind me; eyes down looking at their phone. Smart phone. Dumb operator.
I watched a guy have an accident because he leaned forward to fiddle with the CD player.
At 60mph your car is travelling at 88ft/second. Define quick glance? 1-3 seconds or 88 to 264 feet of travel?
“Mrs. rktman was out the window yelling at him. LOL! Shes gonna get my ass kicked one of these days. “
HEHEHE Same here. We are in Texas and when sitting behind someone at a light and the light turns green if they don’t move in about 2-3 seconds She Who Must Be Obeyed will reach over from the passenger seat and lay on the horn.
I tell her you cant do that anymore you are going to get us shot!
