Southern California braces for summer blackouts due to Porter Ranch gas leak

State officials warn that Southern California could face as many as 14 days of scheduled blackouts this summer because of depleted reserves of natural gas caused by the massive leak in Aliso Canyon.

The canyon in the hills above Porter Ranch is a crucial gas storage facility, supplying 17 power plants in the Los Angeles Basin. But the four-month leak that began in October left the facility at one-fifth of its capacity and new injections of gas have been prohibited until all of its wells have passed comprehensive tests.

Officials estimate the storage facility won’t be back on line for months, leaving local power plants without a key source of natural gas.

“These pipelines also cannot transport gas fast enough to meet the hour-by-hour or changing demands of power plants during the summer when electricity demand peaks,” said Mark Rothleder, vice president of the California Independent System Operator, one of four agencies that warned of the blackouts in a draft report released Tuesday.

Are air-conditioners like modern appliances — all models and types are junk and have to be replaced every few years.

Sorry, I am a little jaded. But I am going to try to keep my 20 year old clunker air-conditioner as long as possible. It is less efficient but it will probably last longer than a brand new “efficient” model and plus it has a 20 year head start.

Well obviously environmentalist freaks are racist..why is it a blackout, why cant the out be white, or brown, or Asian..this will just give the thugs more time to get ready to start looting this summer, you know they are already preparing for it..more reason to be armed

We bought a Trane, should last for 15 years. I suppose it depends on where you live. North Texas summers can be brutal, temps lasting into the 90s at midnight.

With the old system, I had $600/month electric bills. Last summer, I topped out at $400, and the house was cooler than in years past.

We held out as long as we could. Good luck to you, may yours hang in there for another decade.

Stunning, just stunning how the biggest gas leak in US history happened at Porter Ranch and all the global warming types.....****crickets***** Proof positive that it isn’t at all about the environment.

Has Jerry Browns sister said a thing yet? How about those on the board of directors that have been getting huge donations? John and Ken have been all over this.

Colorado. We use ours a lot less often. Usually April to September.

I wish you the best, too. We had to have our unit repaired a couple of years ago and the repairman told us that our unit was indeed an old timer but it would probably run forever. Less efficient and more costly to run versus longevity.

He said that the more efficient units are less heavy duty — heavy duty meaning that more electricity is required to move the blower, etc. And then there is planned obsolescence.

“To keep consumer prices for energy ridiculously LOW, they wouldn’t expand or upgrade the infrasctucture...etc.”

So absolutely incorrect.

Curious as to what gave you THAT idea.

Our electricity rates have been through the roof in California for quite sometime, because of the Democrat liars, and their focused catering to the huge environmentalist participation in their political party.

Democrats powered by environmentalist ideology, and money, along with what they steal from the citizens of the State, and whatever monies they can skim from the Federal government are the ones running California.

This is another stupid move by the Democrats. Another “unforeseen circumstance” they bungled. They got rid of any backup, and now we the people must suffer.

I have to leave now to go fill the gas cans so I can fire up my generator when it all starts.

You haven’t heard? The leftist are now hating natural gas. Really. Because it is a “fossil fuel”.

Read a long article, maybe posted here I don’t remember. And guess what? The natural gas leak used something like 30% of California’s allotted “carbon footprint”. Or some such nonsense.

“They” has seemingly just discovered the natural gas is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than C02. Something like 5 times more damaging than carbon dioxide at the same levels. Or something.

Yep, after converting many, and soon all, coal fired power plants to natural gas they have decided that gas is not so environmentally friendly. Dangerous even.

This crap is getting WAY out of hand. Screw Cali. But they are trying to take the rest of us with them.

When the next practical way of producing energy comes along, they will hate it too, even if it comes from the hydrogen content of water. It’s the hate of mankind that binds them together.

Trust me, it is.
Because I live out in the middle of nowhere, I have my own backup generator and keep plenty of fuel on hand.
Wood burning fireplace and wood burning stove, both cast iron (for backup), kerosine lamps, lots of candles and flashlight batteries. House is all electric out here so if power goes down, everything goes off until I power up and hit the transfer switch.
I keep waiting for my mental breakdown; but I guess raising my own food (meat, vegetables, fruit) keeps me busy and working hard enough that I just don’t have time for it.
Lots of wild game up here too, deer, fish, and all manner of game birds.

What does the energy provider do with the money, if they don’t keep the infrastructure updated.

I think the real reason is the local Green extremists, and overall political support for them, moreso than the Federal EPA.

That’s really bad advice. You really, really don’t want an oversized residential unit, as it won’t dehumidify properly. Your new unit is just a lot more efficient than your aged unit.

Kindly inform me as to what the infrastructure has to do with the issue.
