A 20-year-old horse is recovering after being shot more than 100 times with paintballs. Lily is recovering at the New Bolton Center in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
"In 15 years, I've never seen another paintball case," New Bolton Center veterinarian Dr. Rose Nolen-Walston said. "You can tell she's a sweetie and you can tell she's happy to be getting some food and some care."
Omega Horse Rescue's Kelly Smith found Lily at the New Holland Horse Sale Stables in Lancaster County on Monday after the horse auctions. They found no sign of an owner and believed her to be abandoned at the stables. They called the SPCA and Smith took Lily to New Bolton.
"It was deplorable," Smith said. "Her eye was swollen shut. The other one she can't see out of. Her head was hanging down. She was very depressed."
Dr. Nolen-Walston said tests are being to done make sure Lily is in good health. She is in isolation to prevent disease and is being fed a certain diet to help her, as she is underweight. Dr. Nolen-Walston said the paintballs caused body soreness but no permanent damage.
"If you look at her she's obviously a very old, debilitated horse, who can't defend herself," Dr. Nolen-Walston said.
"I hope that her remaining days can be found with someone who is going to love her and appreciate her," Smith said.
Now, they are looking for a new home for Lily while officials search for her original owner.
They said they are working with the Lancaster County district attorney's office is opening an animal abuse case. In Pennsylvania, animal abuse is a summary offense.

I didn’t see this article the first time, so thank you for posting it. That poor baby. I’m sending a donation for her care and contacting people I know in PA with horse farms to see if they can take her.

They don’t have to get caught first, there are cameras all over today that can produce linear recordings of actions in a specific area and linear evidence that can be traced, for example markings, brand names on the shovel, price tags, dog tags, a lot of evidence that can lead to a culprit. Just off the top of my head I would say an illegal did this, drug gangs get off on torturing and killing dogs. If I saw someone do this to a dog, I would end up in jail, I know I would which sucks because legal trouble like that, even if you get probation means at the very least bankruptcy. This government and its legal system LOVES to take money.

They have probably graduated to doing the same to humans.
Mind your language, please; there are ladies present.
There are still kind, wonderful, compassionate, caring people in this world. Don’t let the human detrius that committed this despicable act darken your world. Instead think about all the wonderful people coming together to care and provide comfort for this wounded animal.
I don’t hate people...their actions, however, are another matter altogether.
Yes, looking on the positives make it less hurtful. Added to that the horse is alive- even worse would have been if it had to be put down. I have my envelope addressed already for a donation via snail mail.
Oh, beside the point I know, but up here in snowy Ontario, Saturday. I spied a little lost Yorkie Terrier. It was running aimlessly. I called the local humane society and a cheerful employee collected it. About three people all fired up to adopt it. Nobody seems to own it. They say it has a bladder infection and will keep it for another seven days.
Yeah, you got it! I was talking about you getting caught... You know, the old “shoot, shovel and shut-up” nugget...
Not beside the point at all. Just another example of the goodness in the hearts of some vs. the meaness in others.
