Echo Voyager, Boeings latest unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV), can operate autonomously for months at a time thanks to a hybrid rechargeable power system and modular payload bay. The 51-foot-long vehicle is the latest innovation in Boeings UUV family, joining the 32-foot Echo Seeker and the 18-foot Echo Ranger.
The size of the new Echo Voyager is in the middle of the German U-Boat lengths which were 40-60 feet long depending upon design.
U-boats dominated the seas for several years due to the fact that thousands were produced.
A militarized Echo Voyager could have a similar role if they were mass produced at low cost in the event of a conflict.

DOH!
I don’t understand either the need to compare them to German U-boats at all.
No doubt there are plenty of past and present US, Japan, Canada, Soviet subs of possibly comparable size.
Its like saying - US Soldiers average 5’8” - nearly the SAME size as soldiers from Hitler’s feared SS!!
Das Echo?
The pressure hull for the type II was about 90 to 97 feet, depending on the variant (27.8 -29.8 meters)

He is talking about the Type II coastal. 40 meters long, about 134 feet was the shortest one. But still much bigger than the 70 feet he is talking about.
Even the Jap mini-sub at Pearl Harbor was 78 feet.
Type XIV were 220 feet long. XXIs were over 250 feet. Type X was almost 300 feet. I can understand why the idiot reporter wouldn’t want to put his or her byline on this story.
(Even the coastal XVII was 120 - 136 feet (depending on variant)).
Here’s something close = CSS Huntley about 40 feet. Sounds like the Boeing sub uses a different propulsion system than did the Huntley.
Cool looking, Thanks!
Wave or electric powered. Hmmm, Is it using Musk batteries?
“Even the Jap mini-sub at Pearl Harbor was 78 feet.”
Wow - I always thought of it as two guys (two small Japs at that!) crammed into a 10-foot long tube. Of course I didn’t think too much on it. Engine, transmission, oxygen, etc. But still never would have figured on 78 feet.
Suspect our Russian and Chinese friends are already advanced and potentially deploying these advanced platforms.
I was wondering why the math and visualization wasn’t working out in my head.
Who writes this crap? If they had produced "thousands" rather than the hundreds they did produce we'd have had a much tougher time in the Atlantic and it was tough enough as it was. If they had even had the several hundred Donetz was promised he'd have before starting the war they'd have easily starved Englind into a negotiated settlement early on.
Keep in mind that the torpedo tube alone would take up over twenty feet.
I saw an actual Japanese mini-sub, on static display, at the Battleship Cove museum in Fall River, Massachusetts.
It is nowhere near 78 feet long. More like 25 feet long.
Well, being unmanned, it would almost have to, wouldn't it?
German subs were way longer than 40 feet.
40-60 meters, not feet.
