Donald Trump and Tiananmen Square
National Review ^ | February 27, 2016 | Jay Nordlinger

Posted on 02/27/2016 9:37:11 PM PST by ConservativeTeen

In Thursday night’s debate, Donald Trump put in a word for Saddam Hussein and Moammar Qaddafi, in a way. He said that, if those two were still in power, “instead of having terrorism all over the place, we’d be — at least they killed terrorists, all right?”

The fact is, they were terrorists. And funders and shelterers of other terrorists. (Abu Nidal, for one, in Saddam Hussein’s case.)

His interviewer asked, “You mean firm hand as in China?”

Trump answered, “When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak … as being spit on by the rest of the world –”

No, Donald, the real strength was demonstrated by the people who were willing to risk their lives by standing up to a totalitarian regime.

Yikes, Trump admires the communist thugs who ran China for putting down the Tiananmen Square protest “with strength.” Yesterday Trump was saying he would open up the libel laws to make it easier for him to sue the media. This guy really is a fascist.

“That Saddam was really really great at putting people into woodchippers feet first. A classy classy dictator. And he was on of Trump Steaks biggest customers...” (Donald Trump)

Here is a longer quote from the article to give a little more context about just how bad Trump’s quote really was.

“An interview that Trump gave to Playboy in 1990 has just come to my attention. If I’m the last to know about it, forgive me. Trump was asked about Gorbachev — who was nearing the end of his time in power. Trump said, “Russia is out of control and the leadership knows it. That’s my problem with Gorbachev. Not a firm enough hand.”

His interviewer asked, “You mean firm hand as in China?”

Trump answered, “When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak … as being spit on by the rest of the world –””

didn’t Snowden tweet today Donald Trump or Goldman Sachs? I am listening to Stephen Miller, Sen Sessions aide now working for Trump. Says the Sovereignty of the United States is at stake due to TPP thanks to Rubio and Cruz and their votes for TPA (if I got the initials correct)

Miller goes on to totally rip Rubio’s record in FLA with passing free tuition for illegals as well as killing the bill to get rid of Sanctuary Cities in FL. And how Rubio fought to legalize child molesters and MS 13 gang members.

While I agree with you, I would also state that this showed a resolve that the U. S. government hasn’t shown for some time.

China, even against it’s own people has resolve.

What do we do. We get mired down in efforts and our resolves wanes. That is troubling.

China would be a formidable enemy, because it doesn’t second guess it’s positions.

Do I agree with the government in Tiananmen Square? Of course not. It is none the less a real marker in government hard line resolve.

This is one of my ‘Big things’ that keeps me from supporting him even a little bit.

We had every reason to depose Saddam without needing to lean on ‘weapons of mass destruction’ frankly I wish they hadn't brought it up.

Supporting tyrants just because they maintain order is not a good thing. We should still be in Iraq and should not have left. It worked in Japan. It worked in Germany. Agreed, their populations were better educated but we did not allow them to try again.

They were very brave. Who came to their aid? Who aided the Hungarians in 1956? The Czechs in 1968? The world was perceived as weak.

You are correct and Trump is correct. The power of strength prevailed.

Specifically what do you disagree with in that statement? And what words translate into admiration? Please, please, be very specific and don’t add words that aren’t there

Better come up with something. If not, could we presume you are a fascist also?

“but” and all the words thereafter. He should have shut up after the word “horrible.”

What you said. Scary isn’t it......? Never will they get it though......They think they know him because of what he has said, yet forget that he said he could change anytime he see fit. Leaving his worshipers in the dust.

If you examine his words carefully (including after the word ‘but’), you will see they are simply facts.

Anything else you think you see is just not there. Just imagined due to a hatred of Trump.

The Party had to do something, those kids were way out of line.

They had to show some strength.

We had every reason to depose Saddam without needing to lean on ‘weapons of mass destruction’ frankly I wish they hadn't brought it up

We have no business removing tyrants who rule over animals. In the Islamic world there is either a secular military or a theocracy. The later is worse. Under Saddaam, Christians could sell liquor to themselves and live in peace. Saddam mostly brutalize other Muslims, Shiite and Kurds who want to fight him. He left the Christians and Yazdis alone. People may feel sympathy for the Kurds, but remember they are Muslims. Historically they fought Christians in Jihad

When Saddaam invaded Kuwait, we should have stayed out. All we did was expend lives and resources to return the land to Islamic despots.

Trump is right. We should have stayed out of Iraq.

Leaving Iraq to war with Iran and possibly with Saudi Arabia would have been much better for Western Civilization. There has been nothing but useless meddling in the Muslim world for decades.

Carter removed support for the Shah of Iran and let the Clerics take over. Reagan gave the Arabs high tech weapons to use against the Soviets in Afghanistan to remove communism to only get another theocracy. Bush 41 returned Kuwait to oil buddy despots. Clinton savaged Serbia to give Kosovo to the Muslims. Bush 43 got us into wars that spread all over the Muslim world. Obama is funding some very vicious Muslims to gain power in the Mideast.

We have Americans who go to fight these wars coming home with limbs blown off or killed. The Muslims don't appreciate their sacrifice. Trump is absolutely right. We should have left well enough alone. These wars do not serve the American people.

Oh yes, he will probably take over the whole entire world just for white people and make everyone wear brown shirts, and when he’s done doing that, he’ll take over outer space with some sort of nazi ray beam gun.

Only Ted Cruz can save us, only Ted. only Ted, only Ted.

Or Marco.

Ahhh, the idealism of youth. Youth compared to me anyway.

Sometimes when dealing with real-world problems, the results are messy. Doesn't mean they aren't the best solution in the long run though. China seems stable today, and the people seem satisfied with their government, as far as I know.

I seriously doubt things would have turned out with less loss of life if the government would have allowed the situation to grow into a full-scale civil war. Would that have happened? I don't know, and you don't know either. I expect that the people who actually had to make the decisions on how to respond to the protests know a lot more about the reality of what the risks were than either of us will ever know.
