Judge rules teen who killed his entire family at age 15 could be released at age 21

Nehemiah Griego was 15 when he killed five family members at their home

A judge cleared the way Thursday for a New Mexico teenager who shot and killed his parents and three younger siblings to be sentenced as a juvenile and released from state custody by the time he turns 21.

Nehemiah Griego was 15 when he opened fire in his family's home south of Albuquerque, killing his mother as she slept and then his nine-year-old brother and two sisters, ages five and twod.

Griego's father was the last to die. The teen waited in a bathroom and ambushed the gang member turned pastor after he returned home.

Griego pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree murder for killing his parents and three counts of child abuse resulting in death for killing his siblings, ages 9, 5 and 2

'It all points in the same direction,' said Jeffrey Buckels, Griego's public defender. 'He's getting better and deserves a chance.'

Judge John Romero ruled on Griego's treatment after a hearing to determine whether he could be sentenced as a juvenile, which allows his release from state custody in just more than two years. Griego turns 21 in March 2018.

Prosecutor Michelle Pato described the killings as predatory and cold-blooded, with Griego waking his younger brother to show him his mother's body before shooting the 9-year-old too. Griego took a photo of the two victims before shooting his younger sisters in their beds. 'He played with his brother that day knowing he was going to kill him,' Pato said.

Judge Romero said state law called for the hearing and his findings to focus on Griego and his prospects for rehabilitation, not the offense.

A hearing will be held to sentence Griego as a juvenile in three to six weeks.

According to new information released by police today, Nehemiah Griego, the 15-year-old son of an Albuquerque pastor, had plans to kill his family, his girlfriend’s family, and local Walmart shoppers for weeks before he acted on the impulse on Sunday.

“Nehemiah said after killing five of his family members he reloaded the weapons so that he could drive to a populated area to murder more people,” a police report from the incident stated.

Under a plea deal, Nehemiah Griego, who was 15 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his parents. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

Because Griego pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse, the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office says he is entitled to a hearing to determine whether he will be sentenced as an adult or juvenile. A district court judge will decide at a hearing in January.

Have no doubt he is pure evil and shouldn’t be allowed to be a part of the outside world for the rest of his days, but that’s what can happen if you let them into the juvenile system.

“My murderer” and his twin collected on his step-father’s life insurance (they got 2/3rds and step mom got 1/3). You see, they weren’t convicted of murder or manslaughter, but rather “delinquency”. Check was deposited in his canteen account.

Court documents stated Griego told investigators he was annoyed with his mother.

Give him probation on the condition that he lives with the judge.

The father..... 51-year-old Greg Griego, was a former pastor at the area’s Calvary Church who was also a chaplain to the Albuquerque Fire Department

Griego family speaks out on Nehemiah's behalf

They described him as a bright, curious, incredibly talented young man, who, as we hust said, made a terrible decision.

“made a terrible decision.”

That’s putting it lightly.

If he is sentenced as an adult and put in the general prison population, he will almost certainly meet with an unfortunate accident...

He’s a sociopath, and can never get better. Hopefully he kills the judge and his lawyer.

“We all know what my dad and Sarah (Griego, his wife) would’ve wanted,” said Annette Griego, Greg Griego’s eldest daughter.

Greg Grigo had five children before he met his wife, Sarah, with whom he had five more.

“And we know that, more than anything else, they would’ve wanted Nehemiah to be given a second chance. If my dad were here, my dad would stand by Nehemiah.”

Defense attorneys' case presented a narrative of a teen who grew up in a chaotic environment, enduring emotional abuse by his mother and physical abuse at the hands of his father that likely led to a traumatic brain injury.

Its not the dog's fault it got rabies, but you still gotta put it down.

Ofcourse a sociopath is on good behavior in lockup.

Just wait till he’s out and has access to guns.

Those family who want him released will be his next victims

A residential supervisor at Sequoyah Lodge, where Griego is undergoing treatment, said the 18-year-old had matured into a role model for other troubled boys, while one teacher described the teen as a thoughtful student despite having expressed racist viewpoints, a fascination with war and Nazi Germany, and the notion of absolute power.

Ah yes, the perfect role model for other troubled boys.

Exactly such a murder was committed in Cockeysville, MD in 2008 (I believe) by Nicholas Browning. He was 15 at the time, and he has to serve a few life sentences. Justice ought to be applied equally. How is it that Browning killed his parents and 2 little brothers and gets that sentence while this pr!ck gets such a light one?! On the other hand, hearing of this will certainly grind Browning’s gears - that’s the upside.
