Cryogenics: Entire Rabbit Brain Successfully Frozen and Revived For First Time

"Using a combination of ultrafast chemical fixation and cryogenic storage, it is the first demonstration that near perfect, long-term structural preservation of an intact mammalian brain is achievable," the Brain Preservation Foundation wrote in a news release.

The team, led by recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate Robert McIntyre, filled the vascular system of the rabbit brain with chemicals that prevent decay and allow it to be cooled to -211 degrees Fahrenheit. When thawed, the brain was found to have all of its synapses, cell membranes, and intracellular structures intact.

"Every neuron and synapse looks beautifully preserved across the entire brain," Kenneth Hayworth, the Brain Preservation Foundation president, said in the release. "Simply amazing given that I held in my hand this very same brain when it was vitrified glassy solid ... This is not your father's cryonics."

What was to become the story we know as Frankenstein, was written by Mary Wollstonecraft at a summer retreat on Lake Geneva. She and her betrothed Percy Shelley were the guests of Lord Byron whose personal physician was Dr. John Polidori. They On a challenge from Byron, they all endeavored to write a horror story. Polidori’s contribution was later published as, “The Vampyre,” which would become the first modern English vampire story.

Horrors! Shades of Frankenstein. - If they ever do get to
where they can freeze whole mammal bodies; the mammal would
surely end up feeling like heckfire and not living too long
at that.

I wonder how long till the first human trials of this and how much brain damage takes place that has nothing to do with synapses integrity.

What was to become the story we know as Frankenstein, was written by Mary Wollstonecraft at a summer retreat on Lake Geneva.

And they say that wouldn't have happened if Mt. Tambora hadn't blown its top in 1815, causing the "Year Without A Summer" in 1816. The gang in Switzerland was miserable about the grim weather...

wow. What a fruitful weekend!

never read Frankenstein, but I gather the Boris Karloff character is not what they had in mind.

Perhaps more the (terribly cast) Robert DeNiro character was more i line?

and i’ve heard the book ends horrifically.

was my life extra hard or does anyone else NOT want to live forever?

i will fight dying as it is built into us, but to live 400 or 500 years?

and when those years are up, will we still say they went too quickly, like the woman who died last year at 115 said?

if it’s not infinity, it will ALWAYS go too quickly

pain and sickness and the deaths of loved ones, regrets, money issues, work issues, family issues..for thousands of years?

i’ll pass.
