Persistent cough that won't go away

Posted on 02/10/2016 12:40:50 PM PST by ConservativeMan55

Hey Freepers!

What are your cough remedies?

I've had a persistent and overwhelming cough since December.

I've been to multiple doctors, been on anti biotics, had all kinds of cough syrups and drops. Nothing seems to stop it.

Anyone have a home remedy? Thanks in advance!

check your medications. Maybe if you’re taking an ACE-inhibitor for hypertension may cause cough.

Lung Cancer

Reactive Airway disease-COPD or asthma

GERD-reflux. may improve with meds, CPAP if caused by sleep apnea.

Allergies.

there’s a list you can go through

Do you have an electronic air purifier in your home? If yes turn it off and air your house out a few minutes. You may be allergic to Ozone {please people this isn’t tin foil}. They produce Ozone and it can trigger coughing fits. That info come from my allergist. I’d see an allergist? Got cats? Been tested for allergies? I’d look there next.

Try heavy and frequent antacids. Your cough can be caused by sour stomache.

I also have a friend with a persistent cough. She’s had it for years. Turns out it’s an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s syndrome. I sure hope it’s not that. Will keep you in my prayers.

Check with a doctor. There are many things it could be, some of which are not obvious, like acid reflux.

Eventually they’ll do an X-ray. But X-rays being their own problems. We don’t needs more of them than we absolutely have to have.

Phenergan cough syrup is able to target the cough/vomit nerve and quiet the cough.

Wife went through a terrible spell of no sleep, hospital trip,a and several types of cough medicine before an intern recommended this stuff. It works.

And...I’ll bet it is lisinopril.

I take it (40mg/day) and have no problem but, I am among the few in which it does not cause a dry cough.

Doctor told me the best way to control HBP at my age is consistent exercise.

Heat a glass of milk and mix in half a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Not only stops coughs but is a good cure for hemorrhoids too!

If you've had untreated acid reflux for years, get yourself to a gastroenterologist, who will probably order an upper endoscopy for you. In the meantime, take Zantac or Prilosec for the reflux. The Prilosec you take once a day, in the morning. It will take a day or two to work, but will stop the heartburn cold.

I was taking it for five years and finally saw a specialist because I still had occasional attacks of choking after eating. I had the endoscopy done and they found a condition called Barrett's Esophagus, a pre-cancerous change in the cells of the esophagus. The procedure was a breeze. It won't cost much if you have good insurance.

I should have said, “rule out acid reflux” rather than suggest heavy antacids — but a tums before bed might help. As we age our digestion ages too. We can’t eat like we used to do. If it’s acid reflux, and a cough often is, it’s a cheap and easy cure. Good docs try easy stuff first. Don’t eat snacks before bed, avoid alcohol at bedtime, cut down alcohol, Take tums PRN —a litt bicarbonate. Ibuprofen can make for acid.

I agree with Weezer. Try predisone. It’s a wonder drug. Just be sure to take it with food.

Two possibilities come to mind:

1) There is a cough variant asthma that many doctors do not diagnose because they are looking for weazing.

2) Rule out an allergy, Dr’s almost never do. Do elimination diet, investigate common sources like molds. Be a detective.
