When Dr. Martin Luther King was jailed in Birmingham in 1963, he wrote answers to his critics printed as "Letter from a Birmingham Jail". In the early 1980's Nebraska Pastor Everett Sileven Ramsey wrote from jail when he was imprisoned for operating an illegal Christian school.
Ammon Bundy is now recording his messages from jail through his lawyers, who released his latest yesterday in what appears to be an emerging campaign.
Bundy is calling on state legislators to come to Oregon and visit him and the other prisoners from eight different states.
The Ammon Bundy statement reads in part:
"....It is your duty to hold federal agencies at bay, protecting the people in your state. And to those who disagree with my speech, or our civil disobedience, and may dislike our ideas regarding that the land belongs to the people: Please remember that you do not want free speech to be retaliated against by government officials. If you do not advocate for government to tolerate ideas that it hates, then the First Amendment and free speech mean nothing.
Arm yourself with ideas. Arm yourselves with education. Argue and disagree. Be free. Thank you"
One legislator answering the call is Nevada State Assemblywoman Michele Fiore. She cited the jailing of Nevada resident Ryan Bundy as a reason for her visit telling Oregon Public Broadcasting: "There is a Nevadan sitting in jail and as an office holder, I will be there to demand his release...If that Nevadan can't leave Oregon, we will bring Nevada to him. Peaceful of course"
What appears to be shaping up is a visit by Western state legislators to Oregon to both Harney County where the siege continues at the refuge and to the jail in Portland where the 'political prisoners' are being held.
The legislators will be meeting up with another important personage when they make their visit in the next several days.
Coming to Oregon also is the father of two of the prisoners in Portland, Cliven Bundy.
Oregon Public Broadcasting reports that Cliven Bundy will protest in Burns and Portland on behalf of the four people still occupying the refuge and his imprisoned sons.
The elder Bundy gained fame during the 2014 standoff between his supporters and the Bureau of Land Management on his ranch 50 miles north of Las Vegas.
Hopefully Mr. Bundy's visit will not be leading to any 'traffic stops'.
Two complaints have been filed with the Oregon Bar Association against Ammon Bundy's lawyers from Salem's Arnold Law Firm.
The accusers point fingers at the lawyers visiting Ammon Bundy at the refuge before his arrest. The lawyers are said to have arrived at Burns and sent Bundy a message discussing their services and this is said to be 'unethical'. The story was getting lead story play from the "OregonLive" website last night.
And at the besieged refuge now renamed "Camp Finicum" 27 year old David Fry from Ohio is putting out the word that he can 'outsmart' the FBI's communications shutdown with videos he's been able to post on You Tube.
I guess its possible to beat a shut down on the Internet. A lot of people in Iran posted pictures and videos of demonstrations against the regime in 2009 when the Internet was being shut down by them.
Yesterday's video post (17 hours ago) featured Fry quashing an allegation by another You Tuber who's posted videos about events in Oregon. That person suggested Fry might be doing the bidding of the government.
Fry's parents spoke with him on the phone last week during an online broadcast with his father saying: "We are proud of you."
William Fry told the media last week his son is a person who believes "our country is going in the wrong direction...He believes it so strongly he is willing to stand up with the hope that these actions might wake the nation up and lead others to get involved to change our country's course."
Fry's videos have been panned with some negative comments from Leftists and there's certainly a rougher kind of language in them which may offend some of us.
