Is the new "X-Files" for real?
pure vanity | 2/3/16

Posted on 02/03/2016 6:57:37 AM PST by pabianice

We are three episodes into the new six episode reboot of "The X-Files," one of the past's best TV shows. At this point I have to wonder: What the Heck is going on?

Mr. Duchovney's performance is so bland and so flacid that I have to wonder what is going through his mind. No energy. Reads his lines like a telephone robocall. Looks tired and bored. The plot lines are tired and the last episode featuring a "wearhuman" was so stupid and badly written I thought it was a put-on. Bad plot, bad costume, bad writing, boring and nonsensical. And the role-reversal between Mulder and Sculley is also strange. Now she's the one who believes in the strange and he's the one who is skeptical.

It's been hard to watch this devolution.

Was Duchoveny contractually obligated to do this mini-series? Was anyone else? Even the music is bland and forgettable.

Damed auto correct. If she knew I referred to her as “ice”, ice is all I would feel for a while.

Couldn’t decide if the last episode was better or worse than Killer Clowns From Outterspace. Hope it gets better.

As it sits he’s a bad guy who saw the light before the show, and then the light turned out to be a train. It casts his arc of BB as a wages of sin story, this show is the story of his sins. It is a weird tone, not for all, but if you’re loony enough to like it it’s very rewarding.

Yeah that was amazing. So depressing for him. Did a great job of showing how much of the world was against him, but also how much was his own fault. It really hammers home how he never really wanted to be good at being Jimmy, he wanted to be his brother. Which is really his tragic flaw, he could never accept that he could be a good person, he just wanted to replace himself, and you can’t replace you.

And there’s an element of tragedy and betrayal as well. He really wanted to go legit and make his brother proud, but his brother could never see him as anything other than a joke, as “Slippin’ Jimmy.”

The final episode of the season seems to be Jimmy finally embracing his role. If Chuck seems him as Slippin’ Jimmy, then he’s going to show Chuck just how slippy he can be.

I've only seen the first four episodes. I'm hoping it gets better.

Thanks for the input.

I’m wondering if they are going to bring in the 3 “Lone Gunmen” idiots that were Mulder’s buddies? They were great.

Yes, the Lone Gunmen are scheduled to appear at some point.

I thought the lone gunmen were killed off, in one of the movies if I recall correctly.

Death is no big impediment in the X Files world.

Connoisseur of the show (Seasons 1-6 at least). Am not happy with the direction of this mini-season. Tired bitter Mulder versus snarky Mulder is not working for me. Anderson just seems to be going through the motions.

Writing and plot lines are weaker too. Sadly a disappointment ...at least for me.

I loved Breaking Bad and Saul. I did not know it at the time but the producer earned his skills on the X-Files - he said he pretty much copied the style as his own because he learned it from Chris Carter.

It is not a 100% great.

Me? I would have gotten a young Mulder type hero and made Fox Mulder that guy's "Deep Throat". David would co star in some episodes or be the focus of whole episode arcs but he would not be the show's regular star. Because he is 50 years old now and was pretty much put through the psychosocial and emotional wringer by the show's mythology he can't be the eager beaver spry kid.

I wish I worked in Hollyweird. I have such great ways to improve shows - like a show doctor ! LOL!

I am not down on this show - I like it - but it - but I can see why they show may seem off to people after 20 years. But I do like my idea of a new character inheriting Fox Mulder's place in the X-Files and Fox being his mentor.

I like that relationship more than a Scully that is still skeptical.

Don't get me wrong, if I had never seen an episode of XFiles, this extension would be decent TV. However as an extension , it seems to taint the shine of what was some of the best television ever made.

Half way through, I don't think it will improve.

I loved Breaking Bad and Saul.

Ditto here. IF you already didn't know, effective Feb 1, Saul (S1) is on Netfiix. Binged in two evenings, and think I'll go for seconds before S2.
