Thoughts on Cruz's Iowa Win
Vanity | 2/2/2016 | pgyanke

Posted on 02/02/2016 11:06:15 AM PST by pgyanke

I was listening to Rush in the car talking about Ted Cruz's win in Iowa last night. There's just about no point to calling his show, sometimes, with the millions trying to get through so I thought I would post my thoughts here.

1. Rush correctly pointed out that Ted's win in Iowa is unique in that he was the only candidate (ever?) to dare to take on the ethanol mandate. I think it's a little deeper than this. For once, voters have been given a choice of a candidate that speaks the truth and lets the chips fall where they may. Every other candidate thinks they have to toe the line and tell the locals what they want to hear. Conservative voters have to accept that this is what it takes to win. Therefore, we never get to actually vote for what we want. Ted showed what happens when true conservatism is espoused without political calculation. Hopefully, he stays true to form and true to principal on other "rails" of politics and gives us the hope of true reform in line with the Constitution.

2. Rush had a caller say that he thought Donald Trump missed the last debate out of fear... or at least he took it that way. That may have hurt Trump's numbers in the caucus. Rush put out an alternate theory that Trump wasn't afraid but rather made a political calculation that without him there his chief rival, Cruz, would take the slings and arrows. Trump had nowhere to go but down so why take the chance? This was an opportunity to make Cruz the center of mass for the attacks. I'm sorry but that still translates as fear. This is the old "prevent defense" approach I hated as a decades-loyal Oakland Raiders fan. They would get ahead and then give the game away by sitting on their lead. Don't change your game plan. Sitting on a "prevent defense" is still an expression of fear... the fear of failure because the only movement available is down. It's a fear of a misstep.

3. Conservatives can win... forget the "electability" argument. It's about supporting your guy. If you want a conservative, vote for a conservative. Choosing your candidate based on the "electability" calculation means you let the media or other powers-that-be choose your candidate. That isn't wise in an election that is as much a referendum on the establishment as it is a regular political cycle.

Just wanted to say it.

I not a liberal.

I didn't say you were. I said "too judgmental" is the usual tack against conservatives by liberals. Just because Ted is to the right of you doesn't make him "too judgmental" as an absolute. The only judgements I have seen him make are calling a liar a liar and exposing the Washington cartel for what it is. Good for him.

[I liked Cruz pretty well until he or his group indicated that Carson would be out and they shouldn’t waste their vote.]

The word was already out on MSM that CARSON is almost out of money and that it wouldn’t be long until he was out of the race.

NON-ISSUE

our mission as a Christian is to make fun of those who are trying to make their paths to Christ

Can you provide an example where he has done that?

How sure are you that Cruz was behind that?

I’m off to do stuff, but if you check my posting history you will see where I have documented the lying and the flip flopping. bye for now.

I looked through some of your posting history and I saw more baseless claims--for which you were routinely criticized and failed to prove. I didn't see specifics to back up your claims. When you have a moment, please review your own posting history and give a link here to something that can add to the discussion.

“Carson looks like he is out.”

Looks like he’s out and declaring he’s out are NOT the same.

I'm not sure, I said "he or his group". If he had nothing to do with it, he should be standing up and saying he didn't have anyting to do with it.

With the mailing that had people upset, he stood up and said he endorsed it which was the right thing to do even though the mailing itself sounds shady - I didn't get one so I don't know.

I liked Cruz pretty well until he or his group indicated that Carson would be out and they shouldn’t waste their vote. That’s lying and cheating and I have no respect for him if he was involved in that. He was supposed to be a principled Christian choice.

Below is the action of a principled Christian man. I hope you will give him another look:

First on CNN: Ted Cruz apologizes to Ben Carson

RE: Quite honestly, all of the GOP candidates are qualified. Any would be better than Hillary. But I have my choices.

Still, you have not explained to us in what way Ted Cruz is “judgmental”.

We keep asking for examples and you keep providing generalities. If he's bothered you so much it shouldn't be hard to give an example of something he's said that bothered you.

So when you said:

“our mission as a Christian is to make fun of those who are trying to make their paths to Christ”

You were just making up something to criticize him?

Not quite the same as rude.

I give up! Some of you are impossible to please, just like Cruz! I’m going to vote for a Republican March 15 in Ohio. It’s my right to vote for who I like best and who I believe will do the best job for our great country. Cruz is not at the top for me. Sorry if that offends some of you.

My thoughts.....no surprises except the lambasting that the establishment candidates took sans semi-establishment Rubio.

Trump did great given no ground game, Cruz should have won the 60% religious vote, Rubio is seen as the safe bet who is not a Bush, Kasich, or Christie.

3 tickets issued and unless someone else surprise in NH it’s just 3 candidates for the rest of the primaries.

I’m not trying to tell you who to vote for.

I was trying to understand what you saw wrong in Ted Cruz.

God Bless.

No one's trying to tell you how to vote. However, you did state in your first post on this thread that he was last on your list of candidates. Now, you are backpedaling to the above statement. On a conservative site... just trying to understand why supposedly conservative people would put him behind the likes of Bush, Christie, and Kasich.
