Yes it sank in Charleston harbour but did sink a Federal ship first I think

Killed most aboard

The Chet Huntley......it sank every time it went out but showed macabre promise

(Hunley)

They did; "Iron Coffins".

There was a purpose built submarine The CSS Hunley, which was the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel in wartime. It had problems and sank, killing three different crews by the time it was lost.

are they kidding??!!

there aren’t enough Xanax in ALL of NYC to get this neurotic NYer into one of those!!!!!

must have been tough guys.

there was one almost used to sink an English ship in the Revolutionary war.

fit one person and was decided it would never make it across the river as it was man powered and he’d be exhausted before reaching :)

That was the Turtle. It never succeeded in sinking an enemy vessel. One man crew.

They were volunteers, and definitely courageous. Imagine, if you will, the idea of being the ones to break the Union blockade of the harbor, and you will understand.

Charleston, South Carolina.

CSS Hunley for more information, (for starters).
