Got a mouse in your pocket? Who is this "we"?
Adios! From me.
BRAVO and you deserve that for stepping into this lion’s den. The males in my family all cussed, father and uncles but the women went to their graves without ever using cuss words. Have to say the males were circumspect about just what words they could use around the women and children in the house tho’. In the barn, it was something else, I’m sure!
My parents were great movie goers and we went to tons of movies in my childhood but never with any that used this language and I don’t believe any were made that had actors using it. Did early TV? No! Never heard it in schools (1940’s to 1950’s) from teachers or students - inside school or out!
I don’t know when it became acceptable for people to speak with potty mouths in front of everyone but it has always offended me. I lived from the late 30’s to the early ‘80’s without hearing this kind of language in public and always objected. Was I sheltered? No, I always worked and never heard it in the work place either. After the 80’s, for some reason people seemed to enjoy having limited vocabulary for proper language. Sets them apart? Gets them attention? I don’t think the last is true as they use it without even realizing it.
“”The article (anyone read it?) is not a horrified church lady screed. Rather it speaks to what is appropriate language to conduct our national discourse.
So far, I’m not seeing much indication that it much matters.””
Yes, I did and I’m surprised that it was written in 2011. I was disappointed that Dennis thought it was pretty much ok for him to use the same kind of language under certain conditions in his own home tho’...I have to agree with you about not much indication here that any of it matters. SAD! I guess we know where the acceptance of this vulgarity comes from. Why does FR have “profanity” is not allowed in threads/posts if it’s so acceptable to the mainstream? ODD!
I just posted my thoughts on it in reply to another post...can’t change the way I was raised and it’s sad to think the replies are mostly from people who weren’t raised to think this was objectionable. I don’t think our parents said “don’t say those words” - it was just accepted that we were taught and knew what was acceptable and what was not.
I will say that if Trump talks like this currently on the campaign trail, I won’t even consider his name on the ballot. They say we have to respect “the office” if not the person who holds the office. Not likely if this is going to be the case. I guess we’ll see.
You must have been prepared to take the heat when you posted this...More power to you. Talk is cheap and none more so than the ones here who are lambasting anyone who speaks ill of Trump. HORRORS!
Profanity: How small minds try to speak with strength? (Vanity)
I am very sad to see what my grandchildren will have to live through, they don't speak this way either. This talk is not normal in any fashion except perhaps Saturday Night live crowd.
Perhaps they would applaud the Pope or Billy Graham if they too would utter such words, gee he's just like us/s Thanks again
