Vanity: What's the best mattress?
1/22/16 | me

Need expert freeper help: just bought the casper mattress and even though their customer service is exemplary, the mattress is entirely too hard for me. I've slept on it for 5 nights so far and I have tossed and turned every night, all night, trying to find a comfortable position.

If money is no object, what's the best mattress out there?

We looked into sleep number but the price was a killer. We finally just picked up a gel topper at Costco and put it on our pillowtop mattress and it worked like a charm. Now we have plenty of time to worry about getting new one.

I had one of those Select-Comfort things, and it was OK. I wouldn’t recommend it. It was too light in weight and ended up floating all over the sub-frame. It is really better in a waterbed frame. I had it for about two years and sold it. It was comfortable up to a point and I liked that it was adjustable, but I didn’t like the foam in the center of the two air bladders in the mattress, it would get matted down (I think you can understand how that happened) and it would require me to take the mattress apart to fix it.

Purely latex mattress. Its been great! Bouyant, supportive, firm but not hard.

Yep...mattress-girl. She got three-holed and was PO’d about it. She should have been more careful in selecting her dates.

We’ve had a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed for years now.
I do put a thick mattress pad on top of it to keep it from
being too hard. We like it. A good mattress is hard to find.
We were wearing the regular ones out. Husband is pretty
heavy & so am I.

Verlo is a regional maker that will customize for you. We went to the local factory store and talked with the consultant who walked us through the base mattresses, then talked to my husband and I about our mattress preferences. They then customized each side for us. They will take it back and keep changing the foam options until we are happy.

I would recommend a mattress pad before investing in another new mattress. If you like soft, the down pads are very cushy or try the gel memory foam topper. Might be worth a try.

That's a cheap shot. I'm a monthly contributor and I love the community atmosphere here. We don't have to be all politics all the time.

As for mattress, I vouch for the SleepNumber. When I move to my new house a couple years ago, I splurged on one and have been getting the best sleep of my life. They are on the expensive side but have a 25 year warranty.

We love our temperpedic cloud. We bought the first temperpedic about 25 years ago and used it happily until we got the temperpedic cloud about 4 years ago. The cloud is an even better mattress and so comfortable for arthritic bones.

My suggestion is that you get a memory foam topper, two to three inches thick and put it on top of your mattress. You will have softness and support. We actually have a mattress set that was the cheapest one available, with a topper, in a guest room. Everyone who has slept on it says how comfortable it is.

Simmons Beautyrest. You’ll want the $1400 and up models. They go up from there, to somewhere around $7000. Do not go for the lower cost ones.

With all the coils, the large pillowtop, and the gel, you’ll sleep like a king, or queen. 10 year to 25 year warranties.

I just bought a Loom and Leaf by Saatva. It is an online company selling memory foam mattresses. It comes in “relaxed firm” and “firm.” I have the relaxed firm, which is the softer version. I really like the mattress which is similar to Temperpedic, but a lot less expensive.

Check out the online info. It lived up to the info and reviews on the website.
