Vanity: What's the best mattress?
1/22/16 | me

Posted on 01/22/2016 5:50:55 PM PST by spacejunkie2001

Need expert freeper help: just bought the casper mattress and even though their customer service is exemplary, the mattress is entirely too hard for me. I've slept on it for 5 nights so far and I have tossed and turned every night, all night, trying to find a comfortable position.

If money is no object, what's the best mattress out there?

Get a 2’ memory foam topper for your sturdy mattress. You might be surprised at the result. It won’t be too expensive, and if you don’t like it, then try spending $700 for a new mattress.

I saw a list of the ten products with the highest retail markup. The only one I remember is that mattresses were number 2 which really surprised me.

The one I sleep on is a Jamison. It seems perfectly comfortable to me.

The mattress on the left, or the one on the right?

The ones at the Four Seasons.

Just call em up and they will sell you one.

Need to take out a second mortgage but, you will sleep deeply...

Actually, any good-quality multi-layered, thick memory foam mattress works well for us. Our first one was a name-brand $1200 job and that lasted for three years.

When I shopped for a replacement I found one on Overstock.com for less than $500. We’ve had it for four years and still have no issues. (The price has gone up some in that time. It’s now about $650)

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Slumber-Solutions-Gel-Memory-Foam-12-inch-King-size-Mattress/6995888/product.html

The trick with memory foam is to get a good, cool mattress cover. The foam tends to trap heat and it does get ridiculous.

Hubs and I use this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Better-Iso-Cool-11-ounce-Mattress/dp/B000ZK4QBY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1453514282&sr=8-9&keywords=mattress+cover+cooling+king

And the trick with the mattress cover is to NOT wash it. I’ve ruined two that way. Now we have the iso cool cover, then a cheap one that goes over that and gets washed ever so often.

I’ve got a *very* bad back and hubs has sleep apnea, but somehow this works well for both of us. Not too hard. Not too soft. You’re kind of ‘pillowed’ for a few inches, then supported. It really does conform to your body.

We’ll never use anything else.

I have the Casper and it’s really hard (for me anyway). Did it take you a while to adjust? I just don’t like it...

There are a lot of memory foam mattresses that are cheaper then Temperpedic. Look for one with a cool gel top layer, it doesn’t get hot.

McRoskey
I have a McRoskey Airflex mattress that is over 16 years old and as good today as it was the day I first took it home.

Used to be you ordered one and it was ready in several weeks. They were made using old fashioned tools and materials and you could go in the factory that was upstairs from their sales room and watch them making them. I have heard they stopped making them that way around 2010 or so and may not be the same.

I’ve got a memory foam mattress with a gel top that helps counteract the heat buildup of the memory foam. It’s comfortable and cushy down about an inch and then fairly firm, which works for me. Cost about $900 for the set.

What you said - Tempurpedic. Ours is 15 years old and sleeps like it was new.

I've had good luck with the SleepNumber inflatable bed.

It's about the same cost as a similar luxury end standard mattress. It doesn't overheat or outgas like the Thermopedic. At queen size or above you can get a split mattress so each person can have a personalized setting. You can also get adjustable beds for additional comfort.

I've had mine for over ten years and it's still going strong.

Nice thing is that it is adjustable. Some nights you might want it firmer and other nights not so much. You can also get toppers for it.

Also easy to move. Just deflate and put all the parts in a couple of relatively small boxes.

By far the memory foam mattress. Like sleeping on a cloud.

Temperpedic! Fabulous, many different firm to soft choices to choose from. We got a medium about 8/10 years ago and have never regretted it.

I know people who chose the softest Temperpedic and regretted it. Now they say all Temperpedics are terrible but that isn't so.

Check out a modified futon with a foam core. Definitely a YMMV recommendation.
