When my late father in law passed away we were left to break up the house hold.
In going thru his desk we found a will of sorts....One thing mentioned was I was to go to the basement and look in the overhead.
There I found a sealed 8in section of PVC pipe. Inside was his WWII Garand well oiled and wrapped in a old piece of army blanket. It's a beautiful work of art, can't bring my self to shoot it though.
If it weren't for the note I would never have found it

That rifle was meant to be fired. Have it checked by a competent gunsmith and then heat it up.

It's a personal decision, of course, but to me the M1 is a warrior's weapon, made to be used.

Wow. That’s a great story.

We were at my mother in law’s over Christmas. I asked if we could borrow my late FIL’s old Ruger 10/22 long term.

We had to pick through about 15 rifles that were squirrelled away to find it. Nothing exotic but there was a brand new looking Winchester 30-30. I’d never held one of those before.

You may be a sadist. If not, and whether you are a man or woman, trust me on this and you will both be happy.

Good for you, glad your father in law was looking out for you and you found it.

He would have wanted you to use and enjoy it. The Garand is a truly wonderful thing.

Just watch out for your thumb.

That’s a great father-in-law.

Your wife and you and your kids too were all blessed to have him.

Something to note, if it was the actual rifle your father in law carried into combat — there was a field modification that was used to turn a lot of them into full auto weapons.

Major Dick Winters (of 506 PIR, 101st Airborne, Band of Brothers) talked about it in some of his interviews. They called it the “Shifty-modified” Garand because Shifty Powers was so proficient at making them. Winters kept his after the war, but “misplaced” it sometime around going back on active duty during the Korean War.
