I've been amazed how many so-called conservatives are appealing to Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Tribe as an authority on what a natural born citizen is.
He's a very weak reed too lean on for lots of reasons. Pick almost any subject, and Tribe is most likely on the other side.
Tribe has described Ted Cruz as one of his brightest students when he was a student at Harvard Law School. This should tell conservatives something. If Cruz is that intelligent and a formidable debater, and he is on the other side ideologically from Tribe, liberals like himself must make sure Cruz does not get anywhere near the White House.
Here's a curious thing about Lawrence Tribe. I did not find this on my own, but I did recollect something about chimpanzee rights being pushed a few years ago. I wrote "Get Ready for Chimpanzee Voter Rights for Democrats" in 2014. Daniel Greenfield at Front Page Magazine found Lawrence Tribe's involvement in extending legal rights to chimpanzees in a Wall Street Journal article from 2002:
"The advocates of granting legal standing to chimps have gained support from constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe, a Harvard Law School professor. Mr. Tribe argues that the leap isn't as great as it might appear: Courts recognize corporations as juristic, or legal, 'persons'; that is, they enjoy and are subject to legal rights and duties.
Monkey citizens
"'The whole status of animals as things is what needs to be rethought,' says Mr. Tribe. 'Nonhuman animals certainly can be given standing.'
"In legal terms, animals are 'things,' that is, they don't possess rights on their own. The push is to extend the legal definition of 'persons' to Pan troglodytes, the species closest to man."
Consider for a moment how almost everything has been redefined today. Women can declare themselves to be men, and men can declare themselves to be women. White people can identify as black. Facebook has 50 or so gender identities to choose from.
Noting is safe from definitional change.
Given Tribe's legal logic regarding chimpanzees as "persons" who have "legal standing," it won't be long before they will be declared citizens, and if citizens they can be "natural born citizens" based on the provisions of the United States Constitution and thereby be eligible to be President of the United States.
But Ted Cruz can't be president because he was born in Canada to an American citizen mother and spent nearly his entire life in the United States.
Can a Planet of the Apes be far behind?
Tribe thought he was training Cruz to be a Sith — and is dismayed that Cruz turned out to be a Jedi.
I thought it was Alan Dershowitz, not Tribe, who said Cruz was his brightest student?
Then plenty of CAIR leaders or refugees could also gain the US presidency.
I’ve heard Dershowitz say it in an interview. Tribe has been quoted as saying it in several articles.
Refugees? If they have U.S. parents, they are refugees?
I suppose a CAIR member could run for President. As many stupid people as there are voting in the U.S. he might have a shot. We’ve got a member of the Socialist Party running now.
FWIW, I believe Natural Born Citizen should be defined as: Born to parents, both of whom are US Citizens for more than 20 years. If the child is born while the parents are out of the country, documentation should be provided that the parents had reason to be out of the country and intending to return.
However, what I want or believe is not the actual governing law. The only court decisions defining “Natural Born Citizen” right now have Ted Cruz as a natural born citizen.
Sorry Lawrence, and all of the Trump-ettes who are using this to try and take down Cruz.
We need the firewall.
I am starting to think that Cruz is not natural born. Of course he’s a citizen but not by birth on American soil (Jus soli ). His citizenship is conferred by Congress (law).
NATURALIZED CITIZEN
One who, being born an alien, has lawfully become a citizen of the United States Under the constitution and laws.
He has all the rights of a natural born citizen, except that of being eligible as president or vice-president of the United States. In foreign countries he has a right to be treated as such, and will be so considered even in the country of his birth, at least for most purpose
Although no case law supports this, logic and history do.
To be president of the United States, one must be so both by being born here AND by virtue of parental status as citizen(s), either born hete or naturalized. In other words of the blood AND of the soil.
Such requirements make it more difficult for a person to be an America hater or to be ignorant of the spirit of the Constitution. Will await objections.
I am starting to think that Cruz is not natural born.
*******************************************************
I’m beginning to think that brain death is spreading amongst the Trump Cultists of Personality. Ted Cruz was BORN an American citizen because he met the requirements of being an American citizen immediately upon his natural birth.
“One who, being born an alien,”......
I imagine that you might have a problem with the word
“alien” as it may apply to Cruz. Cruz and his people would
claim that word is inappropriate because he was born a
US citizen, not an alien.
Cruz was a Canadian citizen when born also. People with dual loyalties could be divided in love for countries.
“natural born” - those born by C-Section can’t run for president.
:) Does that include chimpanzees born by C section or only other undocumented Democrats?
“I am starting to think that Cruz is not natural born. Of course heâs a citizen but not by birth on American soil (Jus soli ). His citizenship is conferred by Congress (law).”
And you get your belief from where? Not the Constitution, which has no jus soli requirement.
At the time the Constitution and immigration act of 1790 were penned, there were people who lived in the U.S. at the time of the founding, there were immigrants who required naturalization, and there was everyone else.
If Cruz was born to an American mother or father he had citizenship at birth. He was never naturalized. Same with McCain and Doh’bama and a number of others.
You know they say used to say that about Roman Catholics and Jews.

“But Ted Cruz can’t be president because he was born in Canada to an American citizen mother and spent nearly his entire life in the United States. “
The fact of the Ineligibility of Ted Cruz is based upon the law and not upon who takes official notice of that law. The ineligibility for official public office is a legal tradition practiced for many centuries to safeguard the security of governments. Britain denied denizens and others with foreign born parents the right to serve in the Privy council and other government offices. The authors of the Constitution considered similar protections for Senators, Congressmen, and Justices, but finally decided to apply that protection only to the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President. Now we have Liberals and so-called conservatives alike attempting to deny and abrogate the law and its protections at will.
