Nest thermostat bug leaves users cold

A software bug that caused Nest's smart thermostat to stop working has left many users both cold and angry.

Some of those affected took to Nest's own forum and social media to vent their anger about the problem.

Nest said that it was aware of the issue and that it had been fixed for "99.5%" of users.

It recommended that, for those still experiencing problems "performing a manual reset should help". It also published a nine-step fix.

"We are aware of a software bug impacting some Nest Thermostat owners. In some cases, this may cause the device to respond slowly or become unresponsive. We are working on a solution that we expect to roll out in the coming weeks," it said in a statement.

It did not say how many users had been affected.

"performing a manual reset should help"

Tech support's favorite song. They're hoping you won't call back even if it doesn't work.

It also published a nine-step fix.

Nine steps? The Apollo 13 crew didn't have to do that much work.

Nest, the thermostat of hipsters everywhere. Nest is like Apple or Tesla with legions of company groupies.

I think of this every time I see or read how many different gadgets they put into automobiles.

How many are going to die when the software controlling the car suddenly does something unexpected...like applying the brakes while in the fast lane of a freeway.

Hello, IT dept. Have you tried turning it on and off again?

Ok, are you sure it’s plugged in?

Serious question here:
There are truly groupies out there for a thermostat company?
I have vaguely heard of it, yet no idea what makes it special.

I like my Nest. It works fine and my wife likes that it’s small.

And yes, I had to reset it a few days ago. First time in the two years I’ve had it.

Meanwhile, our Honeywell Chronotnerm III is merrily running after 30 years of continuous service, setting the temp down at night, up again when we rise, down when we are at work, and back up again when we return home. No glitches, no software failure, just rock solid reliability. Of course, 90% of owners could never figure out how to program it, so along came Nest for thermostat dummies. Now they are freezing and Nest is going to take weeks to roll out a fix.

LOL! I really shouldn't laugh. My first thought was to wonder what kind of bug it was.

I've cautiously begun replacing my old smoke detectors with Nest Protects, as (a) my current detectors are past due for replacement, and (b) there is a new mandate for CO detection that I need to cover. The few conventional all-in-one units I'd seen didn't inspire confidence, although they were much cheaper than the "smart" alternative.

The Protect's build quality seems excellent, although perhaps over-engineered, and I like the part where I can shut the things up without getting a ladder. Also, it's nice that it can give a warning before it goes into full-on alarm mode is nice, as our kitchen hood is a tad wimpy. I've grown to like the adjustable night light feature. I'm not crazy about having a microphone connected to the Internet on every ceiling, however.

I don't see any point in getting the Nest thermostat. But I'm not in snow country, and our household needs aren't exotic.

Not saying it’s a bad product, just as I own an iPhone and like it. Just saying that throughout the Internet sphere there seems to be whole cadres of people who will rise up to defend the companies I noted, whether warranted or not, that’s all. And yeah, there are some really strong sentiments that are elicited by these companies. I just never understood this.
