Towns Start to Realize AT&T's Gigabit Fiber Promises Are Hollow
DSL Reports ^ | 12/18/2015 | DSL Reports

Last week we noted how AT&T has effectively conned the press into believing the telecom giant is engaged in a massive gigabit fiber to the home build, despite the fact that the company's CAPEX and fixed-line network investment budget continues to drop. In reality, AT&T's singling out high-end developments and universities (where fiber is already in the ground) for highly selective gigabit service, then declaring an entire market "launched."

Same deal with VZ and Fios. $24 billion spent merely as a stop gap measure to compete with cable’s triple play. It ultimately failed requiring the sell off of fGTE territory to Frontier. fBA survives only on the strength of its union contracts.

“Massive gigabit to the home build”
Sorry, I don’t understand. Please rewrite in English.

Awesome, but unfortunately for me, I have Verizon and they are not building out their Fios network anymore. So I am stuck with Cablevision, which is good, but it is not as fast (15mbps Down) and costs more.

I'm shocked.

Well, not so much.

Here, AT&T took over a fairly useable network from Altel, and promptly went downhill. While you once could get calls and voicemails and texts, now they brag about all those G's and it can take a text a week or more to get through.

Forget getting a call past the end of the sidewalk (most of North Dakota is rural) without investing a grand in a cell booster and directional antenna.

All the teevee hoo-hah about streaming video and a partnership with Direct TV? Never mind.

Verizon, on the other hand, is more reliable, has much better range.

Straight Talk is cheaper and works almost anywhere.

Here in upstate NY, FTTH is FIOS by Verizon. It is only being implemented in the larger markets (Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo). It will probably never make it to the little villages in the Mohawk Valley.

Unfortunately not. Only those markets that have pre-existing franchise agreements are being wired up with FIOS.

I don’t think ATT cares about the local end user.More so the corporate users.
Where ever they have to provide local data service it won’t be much.

I am not sure what the gigablast would add. Maybe for a large family who streams constantly, it might be worth it.

My cable co upped their stream from 20 Mbps to 50 Mbps. My Netflix movie starts as soon as I click on the title. How much faster do I need? I can watch 3 streaming sporting events and a movie without any glitches.

I have a love/HATE relationship with Comcast/Xfinity X1. For the past year it’s been love. A year ago we upgraded to Xfinity X1 service with a DVR that records up to 6 channels at once, Triple play with phone and broadband internet. The Xfinity box is wonderful and the remote has voice input and keys reserved for sports and other apps. In fact it’s reminding me to watch the Steelers game today.

Incoming calls show up on the TV.

Best part is the Broadband. On Ethernet speeds average 80-110 mbps! We use mostly Wifi to our machines so that does get cut down maybe 20%.

the only complaint I have is with the router we must use because it includes the phone service, however I was grandfathered in to having 2 cable outlets in our apartment so I have a second router and Wifi at no extra cost.

The only other thing is cost! Gad! If anyone had told me I’d pay $180/month for cable/phone/net I would have told them they were crazy!

We don’t go out much anymore though so it makes sense for us.

I live in a little berg outside of Richmond, VA. I’ve had FIOS for six years. 75Mbps up, 75 Mbps down. Superb signal, and service. Screw AT&T.

I always thought that Verizon was dumping the wrong side of the business. I’d rather try to do business in Texas than in New York. And selling the email accounts to AoL? I guess AoL has to buy customers, because they can’t get them any other way.

That issue aside, I’m still trying to figure out why Verizone is investing in a huge new office complex in the Metroplex. Are they going to get their phone service from Frontier or from AT&T?

I live in a rural area and have had AT&T cell phone service and DirecTV since I moved out here-I recently bundled them to save a few $$$ per month. But as far as internet goes, Hughesnet or one of the other sat-internet services is still the only game, which sucks-the area is too sparsely populated to rate AT&T U Verse service...
