Black Quarterbacks Are Benched Twice As Often As Whites, Study Finds
Pacific Standard Magazine ^ | Nov 10, 2015 | Tom Jacobs

"Black people aren't allowed to make mistakes," musician Prince declared last year, in a statement that spoke for many. Screw up once, the thinking goes, and you're out, having confirmed the view of many whites that you didn't deserve a shot in the first place.

New research provides evidence of that destructive dynamic on one of America's largest stages: the National Football League.

A new study concludes that, after a sub-par performance, black NFL quarterbacks are roughly twice as likely to be benched the following week than their white colleagues. After taking a series of variables into account (including age, experience, and injury), Assumption College economist Brian Volz found a pattern of player replacement that suggests systematic racial discrimination. He also reports that, in terms of on-field performance, teams pay a price for this behavior. Writing in the Journal of Sports Economics, Volz begins by noting that, over the last 13 seasons, the percentage of African-American starting quarterbacks ranged from 16 to 28 percent—startlingly low numbers, considering that about two-thirds of NFL players are black.

To determine whether this reflects racial discrimination, he analyzed data from 2001 to 2009, looking specifically at quarterbacks who started the first game of the season. (He reasoned that those whose first game as a starter come later in the season may simply be replacing an injured or otherwise indisposed player.)

He then took into account a number of non-racial factors that could influence a quarterback being benched, including his age, experience, and performance; the quality of the second-string quarterback who replaced him; and of course any injuries he had sustained. In addition, he looked at the percentage of black residents in a team's metropolitan area, to see if the racial make-up of the fan base had an impact on the decision.

...changed his name to a squiggle...

IIRC, it was $$$ and contract thing with his "estranged" agent and/or manager.

Signing the contract he did was perhaps his mistake. White people also don't necessarily recover from that kind of mistake as well as Prince did. "Huey Lewis and the News" comes to mind. "Boston" is another.

Yeah, they’re thrown more money in a year than most people see in their lives, they’re so mistreated and discriminated against.

yes I have and still Cam Newton is average. Don’t trust me, just look at his numbers. They are average AT BEST. The team with the best defense in the NFL is undefeated. The QB is not an MVP. Why is that dissing him? I don’t like his antics, true. His annoying childish celebrations are out of line with his average ability as a quarterback. The NFL has an agenda hate to tell ya. They forced teams to interview black candidates as I recall. Meritocracy? What a laugh.

Can Newton is an effective QB just like Matt Hasselback was when he was the starting QB in Seattle. Hasselback didn’t have the best stats but knew how to win games. Even took his team to the Super Bowl once.

can anyone name a white quarterback from this century (2001 to today) that was known to have beaten his wife, committed armed robbery, or ran a dog fight ring?

anyone?

of course not. because they don't do it.

want to avoid getting benched? it's simple.

Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam was starting for the Steelers until he was sidelined with an injury. His replacement was a rookie named Terry Bradshaw. The rest, as they say, is history.

I recall reading that a similar study had been conducted regarding the prison sentences handed down to blacks versus whites. Blacks with charges similar to those faced by whites received longer prison terms or prison as opposed to parole. I don’t know if the study uncovered actual facts or substituted with politics. But I recall a commenter on an article saying that the culture that race hounds like Sharpton helps shape insists at every turn that whites hate and harm blacks. By the time a black male has been inundated with “whitey hates blacks” for about 20 years, and he’s brought up on charges that should humble anyone not wishing for years behind bars - he makes THE BIG MISTAKE of glowering and strutting in front of a judge/jury as if the court is beneath them and they keep sneering like a tough guy who’s indestructible - all this focused on “defending himself” from those imaginary white monsters Sharpton always lied to him about.
SO the black male doesn’t look at all contrite compared with the white kid who’s frightened of prison and willing to say anything, apologize to anyone to avoid time. I’d go even farther and say that friends/family members may push a young black male to “keep his head up” and not be “bowed” by the “white” legal system when all a judge/jury wants to see is that the guy understands and won’t do it again. So - swagger can convince a jury that a black defendant is not regretful and in fact, intends to resume his life of crime - they give him longer prison time etc. I think there may be something to this.
Might it be the same with sports? The need to “answer to no one (white)” and swagger and defy is amped up even more among black players than the overly self assured white players? Is it the grown up version of “Parents punish children largely based on the child’s attitude and understanding that they will obey going forward.”?

actually, no. teams have put them on their roster ... and promptly benched him in order to undermine any career he would have (same thing happened to doug flutie. except they benched him due to his height instead of anti-Christian bigotry)

when given a chance, Tebow has done well.

the trick, of course, is that they avoid giving him the chance
(his ratings are much better then the majority of NFL quarterbacks playing today)

White quarterback has bad game throws two interceptions and gets another chance. Black quarterback discharges his firearm while using drugs at strip club with his posse and gets benched. Yep racist.

Full Discloser:
1. Black
2. Played high school football
3. astute NFL fan
4. Sadly a Buffalo Bills fan.

With that said, allow me to add my $.02 to the mix:

Quarterbacks get benched when they don’t perform. Since 2014, off all the QB changes that have occurred to about 18 teams - only two black QB’s were benched: R. Griffin (Redskins) and E.J. Manuel (Bills). Both deserved it, and that’s an understatement (Hey, did you see the 6 minute show E.J put on in London?). Also note that during this same time, every black coach has and is still starting a white QB.

Whatever idiot bothered to do this survey should have added up the salaries of blacks vs white players. Really? This fool doesn’t even realized the NFL has made more black millionaires than ANY other business in America, or do they care?

And since when did Mr. Nelson become an expert on football anyway? Lemme guess: Teddy Bridgewater breaking your heart these days up in Minnesota?

The way the 2015 season is going, pumping out lies like this cheapen the success of Cam Newton and Russell Wilson.

Mr. Nelson should know that like the music business, there’s no room for affirmative action or quotas. If you can’t get the job done, the other black players will be the first to lobby the coaching staff to get him off the field.

On a personal note, I think stories like this are only written to see how many white people they can piss off. It made no sense and had no substance, whatsoever. Frankly, I think all of us would do better ignoring stories like these and focus more on the war that is being imported to American soil.

jimjohn - OUT.

Mediocre QBs get benched more, and most black QBs are mediocre. There. Study refuted.

Exactly. No coach is going to bench a qb who is doing the job or keep one in who is screwing up while there's a better qb on the bench.

I would bet the moron who did this "study" had his conclusion foreordained before he began it.

I am looking at his numbers. 13-0. You see, in the NFL, those are the only numbers that matter.

So... anti-christian bigotry. If thats the case, why did the Patriots bring him to camp? Why did the Eagles? Just to humiliate him? Is that your theory? What about the multiple other Christians in the NFL. Russell Wilson for instance. An outspoken Christian. I don’t see him riding the bench.

Tebow got multiple chances. He’s a great guy, but he’s not an NFL caliber quarterback.

humiliate? no.

they did it to block his ability to start his career. philly was most obvious, waiting to the last day before cutting ... with no reason to cut him

as for his abilities, do i really need to go thru the stats from this season’s 1st and 2nd string QBs? during the preseason w/ philly, his rating was 91, the result of the 2+ year break and the work he did (and that was with a team that was hostile... not supportive).

of course, i put some of the blame on Tim... as he should know by now... liberal states absolutely hate anyone that actually believes and isn’t ashamed to admit it.
