"...ordinary robbers and muggers steer clear of the mafia-protected districts

You're talking about the Italian mafia. We also have the RUSSIAN mafia, and they make the Italian mafia look like a bunch of schoolboys. I wonder if THEY would take part in any moves against ISIS.

Gangs of New York: Sicilian mafia offers Big Apple protection from 'psychopathic' ISIS

A little history: the mob kept the Nazis out of the docks in NYC during WWII. Not saying they are or were good guys, but they did good there.

Check out article, and # 29.

Thanks hoosiermama.

Heh.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!

Yes, it was my way

I'm reminded of a scene from Casablanca, where Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) verbally spars with Nazis:

Major Strasser: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris?
Rick: It's not particularly my beloved Paris.
Heinz: Can you imagine us in London?
Rick: When you get there, ask me!
Captain Renault: Hmmh! Diplomatist!
Major Strasser: How about New York?
Rick: Well there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade.

Trump mentioned in one of his speeches that he was playing blocks as a toddler listening to his father deal with NYC plumbers and electricians on the phone. In the book THE TRUMPS. It mentions that his dad taught him to deal with various ethic trade groups and mentioned that the electrician and plumbers were mop controlled. The cement contractor that his dad paid $1,000,000 when he owed him $900,000 Trump continued to use (even poured cement for Trump Tower ). Was a well known mobster.

When I was stationed in Italy, the small towns had "Vigilantes" who would walk about and insure nobody stole your car or broke into your place. I forget the cost, but it was pretty much extortion because if you didn't pay, you could be sure your property would suffer to make you an example of how important it was to be protected - one couple had 2 cars. One was stolen about 10 PM one night and after the cops took their notes and left, and everyone went to bed, someone came and took their other car.

They did a pretty lousy job until the mafia decided to take over their operation in our town - once they took over there was actual protection in force and they put word out that anyone making them look bad by robbing their customers would not only end up looking bad themselves, but would also have serious problems with their kneecaps....

I’ve heard rumors that mob protection in NYC is cheaper than NYC taxes and FAR more effective than police protection because they seriously injure anyone who violates their protection.

Of course, failure to pay also carries a nasty price.

The Swiss Guards are extremely well-trained bad a$$es.
