Can 'The Force Awakens' become the biggest movie ever?
Fox news ^ | Published November 21, 2015

Riding galaxy-sized expectations, the new "Star Wars" movie is already setting records for pre-opening ticket sales, with still a month to go. But does that mean the movie's destined to be the biggest of all time?

Though several signs point in that direction, the outcome isn't guaranteed.

The movie is on track to have the biggest December opening ever, topping "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which took in $85 million in the U.S. and Canada on its opening weekend in December 2012.

When I saw the first STAR WARS movie back in 1977, I wondered why a technology advanced civilization would need light sabres when a ray gun would be more effective. Even a ray gun from the 1930s FLASH GORDON series would be better than a light sabre.

God made man.
Col COLT and Theodore Maiman(Laser inventor) made them equal.

I am a Star Wars junkie, and yes, I even liked Jar-Jar, but no thanks. I have no interest in seeing this. I will watch it when it’s free on Showtime.

The first movie I ever bought on tape was the first Star Trek movie. Terrible movie. I bought it on Beta. I paid $105.

The concept of owning your own copy of a movie was almost the equivalent of owning your own Ferrari.

I remember Video Review magazine and others would have their “subscriber of the month” and it would always be some couch potato showing off their 30 movies and 25” TV. And most of them didn’t even have any special sound system. It went through the crappy TV speaker. And it was still a big deal.

It’s funny how things really HAVE to change because human beings get used to anything and need something better/different - except the natural. That is kinda telling.

“Will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t blow. On one hand GL’s involvement was minor and Disney isn’t known for making garbage, on the other hand, JJ Abrams.”

I concur.

“Krysten Ritter “

Ah yes...”The Fappening”! WB with the wrath & fury of Eric Cartman’s love of KFC.

“>>I bought my ticket for Saturday December 19.<< I will post my review Sunday the 20th.”

Really? Well, there goes my respect for you, Harry Palmer. (I’m joking!). Again, I’ll echo Impy and say I’ll be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t blow. Be safe at the theater and enjoy. If they try to pack 30 lbs of groceries in a 5 lb bag (Carrie Fisher in a bikini), please warn us of that disturbance in the force...

I still remember the summer of '99 when EVERYONE (even the film's "competition"!) was hailing Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as the MUST SEE film of the year and telling people they had to be "crazy" if they weren't rushing out to theaters in order to see "the first Star Wars movie in 16 years". Star Wars fans even bought tickets to movies they didn't want to watch just to catch the first TRAILER for Phantom Menace (this was pre-YouTube era) and there were stories and images of Star Wars fans camped out in theaters, waiting in lines 3 blocks long, just to buy a ticket for the film. SEE THE ORIGIN OF DARTH VADER!!! IT WILL SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, not falling for that again...

The one bright spot this time around is George Lucas ISN'T in charge of the film, which means there's a possibility that it won't suck (the George Lucas rule is similar to the Stephen King rule... the LESS the creator of the franchise is involved in micromanaging new films using his property, the better the results will be). On the other hand, JJ Abrams IS in charge, which means we'll look forward to more lens flares, plot holes, and mindless action sequences. Can't say I have faith in the guy after Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness -- both films were "meh" although they certainly LOOKED sleek.

I'm reminded of last year's summer "event" movie, Godzilla, where it was being hyped as a MUST SEE theatrical experience, and I told everyone that I had zero desire to see another American-made Godzilla on the big screen after the overhyped Matthew Broderick flop in the 90s. Their response was that I was just jaded by a campy ridiculous 90s movie, but Godzilla was being done by different people THIS time and it would be different because it would be FAITHFUL to the Japanese original and an incredibly exciting experience.

Finally watched both American Godzilla's (1998 Broderick film and 2014 "reboot") on DVD a couple months back. The 2014 version wasn't "better", unless you count the new CGI Godzilla looking closer to the 1950s rubber suit design as "better". Neither film was particularly good, but the '98 version was a tad more fun and entertaining. The 2014 film went downhill after Bryan Cranston's character died. Godzilla himself got about 15 minutes screentime in his own movie (the 2014 film should have been called "Mutos", as those monsters ended up on screen much more). Both '98 and 2014 had about equal amounts of "callbacks" and references to the original Japanese film, with some token Japanese character appearing along with the American cast.

I'm glad I waited for the DVD to see the "new and improved" Godzilla, and I will likely do the same with the "new and improved" Star Wars. Unless the film is getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, its strictly "wait for DVD" to me.

Quentin Tarantino may be facing the same fate by hurting the chances of Hateful Eight?

I will never see another of that @$$hats movies again.

Good idea, although if I really wanted to go, I’d see it in IMAX. ;’) That big screen has spoiled me for regular theaters.

It can have a huge opening. But if it sucks, it will die a quick death.

Adjusted for inflation, it still has to make well over $1billion.

Same here...unless Harry “Perdogg” Palmer says it’s the bees knees.

Looking forward to it. I would love to see it opening night, but I’m going to wait a week for the lines to diminish.

Big Star Wars family here, but my son is getting married that weekend, and we don’t know if we can squeeze it in. At this point, I’m just enjoying all the hoopla. We were part of that free Star Wars concert at Comic-Con for folks in Hall H. We also got VIP seats at the panel, so we were pretty close to Ford, Fisher, Hamill, and the rest. It was a special night. : )

That was the biggest letdown of all. Anakin turns out to be some chubby-faced, auto-racing brat kid who turns into a whiny, sullen teenager who manages to have no chemistry with Natalie Portman (and Portman, who has acting abilities, managed to turn in a very flat performance).

Yes, it can. So let's hope it doesn't suck.

I remember the number of people who paid to go see a different movie just to see the "Phantom Menace" trailer -- and many of them walked out before the movie because they had to get back to work.

... And look how that turned out.

But I got a good feeling about this.

Anakin should have been a teen already when they found him, not a young brat.

I expected him to have a sorta Han Soloish personality not....ugh. I guess Obi Wan was a shite father figure.

And then he goes to the dark side only cause “she was gonna die” and then he kills her, don’t get me started. They barely explored his clear lust for power which should have been the only reason.

Don’t forget numerous lens flares.

...

Lens flare is to movies what cowbell is to music.

Trying to show Anakin turning into Vader, while chasing Senate ass, all under Lucas’s “direction” was a bore.

The Emperor was the best thing about the prequels. He should be in these sequels, but it ain’t looking like he is.

So again, if this flick doesn’t totally suck, it’ll be a pleasant surprise.
