Word For The Day, Monday, 11/16/15
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
hortatory; adj.
urging to some course of conduct or action; exhorting; encouraging: a hortatory speech. Examples: He had assumed a very pompous, hortatory manner, and I could well believe he held a prominent position in Asbury class.
Stories by American Authors, Volume 6 Various
Allowing for its standpoint the book is not virulent, and is a respectable piece of hortatory divinity on its own side.
Minor Poets of the Caroline Period, Vol III John Cleveland
(and is moreover axiomatic rather than hortatory), I use it partly for her sake, and partly because it is undeniable.
Records of Later Life Frances Ann Kemble
Etymology: 1580s, from Middle French hortatoire and directly from Late Latin hortatorius "encouraging, cheering," from hortatus, past participle of hortari "exhort, encourage, urge, incite, instigate," intensive of horiri "urge, incite, encourage," from PIE root *gher- "to like, want" (cf. Old English giernan "to strive, desire, yearn;" Gothic gairnei "desire;" Greek khresthai "to lack, want; use, make use of," kharis "grace, favor," khairein "to rejoice, delight in;" Sanskrit haryati "finds pleasure, likes," harsate "is aroused;" Avestan zara "effort, aim;" Russian zhariti "awake desire, charm").
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
she’s supposedly the HEAD of this movement???
Cause you won life’s lottery and you need to pay your fair share.
I especially like it when Neil got to Greece, and she claimed they STILL have a 1%.
A+++ she’s a loser. may she lose thoroughly.
Popularity does not mean smart. Leadership skills does not mean you should follow them anywhere.
I was part of the 1% until I spent all that money on my kids’ education. Now I’m retired and part of the 50%. :)
I can imagine the joy of a new fridge. I can just picture your face lighting up when you open the door.
(I’ll be here all week.)
I hear ya. we have paid hundreds of thousands as well on tuition, bc they were in private school throughout. as was this dimwit, at least for her HS, for 34K per year!
well what did you end up getting? ice/water on the door?
LOL
Her parents wasted their money.
Your kids can pay you back! ;)
No, we don’t do that kind of thing. Not set up for it.
Other than the fridge dying, it was a good weekend. We did nothing with the band for the first time in forever.
The Jayhawks beat the team that bounced them out of the playoff last year. They’ll play in the semifinals Friday.
Also in the semifinals for the 3rd straight year is my alma mater. Will this be the year they finally break through and get to play at Heinz Field? Their only previous finals appearance as in 1997 at Three Rivers.
Pitt’s running game took command in the second half and they went to 7-3.
And the Steelers had a stroke of bad luck. Their starting QB got injured and they had to rely on this backup named “Roethlisberger.”
and beat the Browns I think?? we had a good weekend also. Friday PM, xshub and I went to watch xsboy coach Gonzaga JV. Started out rough with St Johns scoring 5 goals in the first 10 minutes of play! but they came back, and even though they lost, it was a respectable 6-5. Obviously after some crucial COACHING CHANGES, LOL!
Then Saturday xsbaby and I went to the Caps casino night. VERY fun night, we had pix taken with 99% of the players and the coach and his wife. I only chatted with a handful of them, Brooks Orpik, Matt Niskanen and Evgeny Kutsnetsov. I didn’t feel like talking to the rest of them! Orpik and Nisk are my faves, our “penguins.” They were all very nice, but most enjoyed the convo with Nisk. We talked about Pgh and he said they are nice guys but he REALLY enjoys beating them. We talked about the Winter Classic, I asked if he played and he said he wasn’t there yet, was traded to Pgh the following month, he asked if we went etc. It was a very nice, normal conversation. Kutsnetsov is the young guy who is second only to Ovie in ability IMO. He was the bobblehead they gave away at the Caps blood drive that AM, we donated blood and got it, so I chatted with him about that. I asked if he’d gotten a bobblehead for his baby, and he said oh yeah, I got 20 of them, enough for the whole family!
It was funny we met a couple who was in front of us in line for the Ovie pic [it was the only one I posted to twitter, but we have pix with everyone] they are from Salem, Ohio, it turns out and we chatted away there for quite awhile. the guy said to me, I knew that bc you were nice you must not be FROM here! LOL! we agreed that Pittsburghers are friendly people, and they agreed when I said that northeastern Ohio is basically suburban Pgh [so there neo!]They are BROWNS fans though! were surprised when I said my Ohio fam was all Steeler fans.
I know it looks like a noun, similar to ORATORY, but hortatory is actually an adjective. great graphic though!
A+++ ridic.
Things were weird at church Sat night, they basically fired the whole choir after mass. There will be a two person team doing the music ministry, a cantor and organist. No warning, no discussion, just got told. I am guessing it will not go well for the decision makers. Just a guess.
