No driver? No ticket.
That, at least, was the result when a police officer pulled over one of Google's self-driving cars Thursday in Mountain View, California.
The car wasn't speeding. On the contrary, it was driving too slowly -- 24 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, according to the Mountain View Police Department -- with traffic apparently backing up behind it.

-- David E. Weekly (@dweekly) November 12, 2015 "As the officer approached the slow moving car he realized it was a Google Autonomous Vehicle," a police department post said.
Which is to say that no one was driving the darn thing.
There was, however, a passenger. So the officer asked the passenger how the car was choosing speeds along certain roadways.
He also took the opportunity to inform the passenger about 22400(a) of the California Vehicle Code, which related to impeding traffic -- a section of the law the self-driving car may have been unfamiliar with.

Ping.
Every winds up going 5 over the limit....but no one would tolerate going 10 MPH under the limit for very long.
If you toot your horn at a slow moving auto drive car, does anyone hear it?
Eventually a google autonomous vehicle will cause a traffic fatality. It’s only a matter of time. The legal floodgates will then open wide.
I’m waiting for a Google driverless car chase when it doesn’t pull over. ;-)
The guy riding in the car is responsible.
There is no allowance for a car to be autonomously operated on a California road without someone who is a licensed driver being responsible.
The cop was playing nice because Google owns Mountain View now. He should have ticketed the “passenger”, who is in fact the operator. Just because you have cruise control doesn’t mean you don’t get a ticket.
You can’t make this stuff up.
I can’t imagine putting my kids in a driverless car and sending them off the school.
What’s the big deal? My SUV can drive by itself.
lol
Considering the way they drive school buses around here, it's probably safer.
I bet even car chasing dogs are confused.
Oh wait, i hear Amazon is going to use robotic dogs for parcel deliveries, they get to chase Google cars.
And cop cars all turn into Microsoft drones.
Microsoft cop pulls over google car, claims its using old Apple software and refused to update, in the scuffle everyone gets tasered and wipes out their memory, they self reboot and repeat the cycle over and over while humans ride Android motorcycles freely.
Question: If there were no driver, how did the Google Vehicle know to pull over at all? Does it have a sensor for flashing blue lights?
He was obviously ‘profiling’..............................
Exactly. When I first saw the headline, I thought Google had violated the requirement to have a human in the car. As far as I know, no state allows driverless cars - nor should they.
Have they outfitted any white Broncos with this technology?
They can “see” quite a bit. That’s how they avoid running over pedestrians, getting out of the way of emergency vehicles, and really most of driving.
“Show me your license and registration.”

“What? And stop flashing your LEDs at me. You can’t flirt you way out of this. What’s your name?”
[Boop]
“You’re Betty Boop?”
[Beep]
“I’ll be darned. Can I have your autograph?”
[Beep}
“Thanks. Try to drive a little faster, okay?”

In 10 years that will be normal. Maybe less. GM Super Cruise launches next year.
“I canât imagine putting my kids in a driverless car and sending them off the school.”
At one time I couldn’t imagine buying french fries with a credit card - or otherwise living completely cashless - but now it’s the norm.
At one time people couldn’t imagine hurtling down the roadway at literally breakneck speeds - but now it’s the norm. (BTW: a Nissan LEAF tops out around 94 MPH.)
...and so on. Yes, you’ll be putting kids in driverless cars and sending them off to school ... and appreciating how much safer they are in the process, contrasted with the profound risks of idiot human drivers, or [GASP] _walking_ to school.
Interesting point, have the city/county/state governments thought of how they will continue their money grab of writing bogus tickets when there are no more drivers?
