Gentle Ben the Lying King comes riding to the rescue with the U.S. taxpayer cavalry just in time, right before supporting exporting our remaining manufacturing jobs to Asia via TPP! Oh, wait! Mark Levine said we’re not allowed to criticize Ben Carson because that would be “piling on” during the time the leftist media is attacking him. Guess I better retract my criticism or that would be considered “piling on”.

Admiral Stockdale was not a debater.

He was a bona fide Honorable American Naval Warrior.

James Stockdale

James Bond Stockdale was an American and United States Navy vice admiral. He is one of the most decorated Navy officers who had been awarded the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War where he was a prisoner of war for over seven years. Wikipedia

Born: December 23, 1923, Abingdon, IL
Died: July 5, 2005, Coronado, CA
Spouse: Sybil Stockdale (m. 1947–2005)
Battles and wars: Vietnam War
Awards: Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, More

“Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush have also endorsed statehood for Puerto Rico.”

So, Carson, Rubio, and Bush, all 3 are willing to pander and say anything in order to squeeze out a few more delegates.

Gee, you know you seem more upset about that "no taxation without representation" than the Puerto Ricans are. Every time they've taken a vote as to whether they want to become a state, they've rejected it!

There are arguments to be made on both sides of the Puerto Rican statehood issue. On the one hand, I see the argument that they are taxpayers without representation, so there is a conservative argument to be made that they should be given the opportunity for representation. On the other hand, it would be an electoral loss for the GOP and conservatives, bringing in two additional Dem senators, however many Dem representatives, and a Dem state government.

But, beyond the merits of the argument, I really don’t understand why Carson would even bring this up now? It has not been an issue in the campaign so far (or in any Presidential campaign ever). It is not something that people care about, aside from a handful of activists on both sides. It is certainly not an issue of pressing importance. So, what’s the point of even raising the issue?

Odd.

His military service doesn’t change the fact that Stockdale was out of his element as a vice presidential candidate. And Carson is out of his element as a presidential candidate.

Carson brought it up because Puerto Rico votes in the primaries.

This and his support for the TPP are the real reasons I don’t think Carson should be President.

Carson brought it up because Puerto Rico votes in the primaries.

The relatively small number of Puerto Rican delegates couldn't possibly be worth the backlash from GOP voters in other states, right?

If he is going to use Puerto Rico to pander for votes, I would think he would wait until the general election (obviously Puerto Rico itself doesn't vote, but there are plenty of Puerto Ricans in states like Florida, Pennsylvania, etc.)

with the major exception being that most residents do not have to pay the federal personal income tax

How are you a Federal Tax Payer if you aren't paying the Federal Personal Income Tax?

“Why is he suggesting this?”

Why does Carson do anything that he does? Seems like he’s pretty much just off the wall.

They pay payroll taxes and certain other small federal taxes.

It's definitely a bit misleading to say that "Puerto Ricans are also required to pay most U.S. federal taxes, with the major exception being that most residents do not have to pay the federal personal income tax." More accurate would be "Puerto Ricans are exempt from having to pay U.S. federal personal income tax, but are required to pay certain smaller federal taxes."

Oh my my look at this gem.

Puerto Rico and Statehood By Ronald Reagan When I formally announced my intention to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 1980, my televised speech to the nation included a commitment to not only support statehood for Puerto Rico if the people of the island Commonwealth desired statehood. It also included a commitment that as President, I would initiate statehood legislation which really means that I would take the lead n persuading the people of Puerto Rico - the mainland United States - all American citizens - that statehood would be good for all of us......
