Macy’s closed the store downtown.
You and tioga need to come here and help me clean out my closets and drawers, an ordeal I find daunting. I think I have clothes in every size ever made, some dating back 25 years — even though I take bags of stuff to St. Vinnie’s all the time.
I used to say that if Nortsroms ever came to Wisconsin that Marshall Fields would have to go out of business. The closest Nordstroms has been at Old Orchard in Illinois (north of Chicago). Wisconsinites could buy down there, have it shipped, and avoid the sales tax because we had no outlet in WI. Well no more. Nordstrom is opening at Mayfair this month.
Nordstrom has always been superb for customer service, high quality, and good bargains on their twice yearly sales. And taking returns without question. My son was in college in Seattle when Nordstrom announced their first east coast store. One of his friends observed that the store would go out of business when easterners found out that they could return a well worn pair of Dock shoes and get a new pair for a broken shoe lace. He predicted that eastern “sharks” would take advantage of the store’s liberal policiesto the store’s financial disadvantage.
Nordstrom shoppers will notice that somewhere on every pair of shoes, or tag on a dress, the sales person notes a number written in BPoint pen. That is the sales person’s ID number. When a garment, or a pair of shoes, is returned for any reason, the commission previously paid is deducted from the salesperson’s next paycheck. They earn high commissions, but a lot of responsibility for customer satisfaction is incumbant. Most (all?) of Nordstrom’s clothes are exclusive, so don’t try to return a Macy’s garment to Nordstom. They won’t take it.
The last summer I lived in the Seattle area, I was on a diet and my husband was already working in WI. I went to Nordstrom for their summer sale with a friend and loaded up on clothes to take to WI. I had 2 suits (which I had custom fitted), 1 wool dress, several sweaters and skirts, several pair of shoes, and I don’t know what else I bought. I had so many clothes that they sent a sales associate out to help me carry them to the car. (If you are there for a day’s shopping, they take the clothes away and hold them at the customer service desk. It’s really easy to buy more than you can carry.) Of course our parking was free because Norstrom gave out cold coins for special parking ar a nearby parking garage.
To make a long story short, I lost about 30 pounds before I moved. I took those clothes back twice before I got my final size. Each time, they accepted them and exchanged them with a smile, even though all the prices had returned to the “real” price. They seemed genuinely happy for me about the weight loss and wished me well on my move and in my new home.
They celebrate Christmas too. Every year, at their Seattle and suburban stores, they hire the boys from one of the fraternities at University of Washington (can’t remember whether it was Sigma Chi or SAG - whichever the one that the Nordstrom boys hailed as “theirs”.) and they go into to all the stores on Thanksgiving night and remove all of the fall decorations, replacng with the Christmas decoration. Most of the decorations for ach holiday are fresh flowers, etc. All of the old decorations that are still in good condition are delivered to nursing homes and hospitals in the region for the patients and clients to enjoy.
Many Brazilians know Spanish—and/or French, German, English, etc.
When I was away from our work-site in Brazil, I made myself understood with a combination of my once-good but half forgotten German, my poor and poorly-pronounced French, and my few words of Spanish and Portuguese.

I think that is the difference between the midwest and the coasts.
far more dependent on the kind of school than the location though, bc you can bet MIZZOU would not sit for it and they aren’t located on any coast! LOL!
are there ANY dept stores in downtown Pittsburgh now? that is just a shame.
with my weight loss I just steady weeded out clothes as they got too big for me. I still have stuff that I can give away, but will continue to do it a bit at a time.
I have been a customer since they opened in Virginia. I must have ordered 20 dresses for my mother of the bride dress, would try them on and then return, winnowing down to the “perfect” dress. I find it easier even though we have at least 3-4 nordstroms in easy driving distance, to order online. That way you have a nationwide selection instead of just what your particular store might have on hand. I only go to the stores to return, though you can do that via mail, prepaid, as well. looking forward to Black Friday shopping at the King of Prussia mall in PA, no sales tax on clothes!
have to beg to differ on the celebrating Christmas part of Nordstrom, NOT HERE! used to be, when my kids were little, a friend of mine would take her three girls and I would take my 3 kids, to Breakfast with Santa at Nordstrom at Tysons corner mall. There is nothing like that any longer. They used to have the Easter bunny too, when my kids were little. no more. NoVA and DC area are FAR too PC for that. and far too many arabs frequent that store to sit for it.
I had a similar experience in Italy, when I was attempting to speak a combination of Spanish and English to my Italian driver!

that is just criminal. what a shame. A downtown that used to have three thriving department stores down there is reduced to zero! didn’t they used to have a Saks down there too, is that also gone?
DC used to have three also, when I first moved here— Woodward and Lothrop, Hecht Co, and Garfinckels. Both woodies and hechts became Macys and Garfinckels just went out altogether.
Sorry to hear that. I hope Seattle hasn’t given up its traditions, although considering the leftward slide of the city in other respects, I imagine that it has.
Another tradition of Nordstrom’s that I always loved was the fact that employed a live piano player to tickle the ivories during peak shopping hours. I could leave my husband in the chairs by the piano and he was content to listen and talke to the artist while I shopped to my heart’s content.
No MUZAK for them.
The last Nordstrom Breakfast with Santa we took the kids to had an honest to goodness “little person” as Santa’s elf too! I think they had a piano player here too but again, not any longer.
ha, just tell them your name is “Merry Christmas” and make them write it on there and call out your name. It will be more festive that way.
