"Half a million people are dead who should not be dead," Angus Deaton, the 2015 Nobel laureate in economics told my Post colleagues Lenny Bernstein and Joel Achenbach.
Deaton, an economics professor at Princeton, was talking about the stunning finding that he and his wife, Anne Case, made while analyzing U.S. death data from the past few decades. The researchers found that the mortality rate for white men and women ages 45 to 54 with less than a college education took a sharp turn upward in 1999 - a disconcerting reversal that has been virtually unheard of in advanced countries.
To put that number into perspective, Deaton estimates that a half-million deaths is "about 40 times the Ebola stats." He added, "You're getting up there with HIV-AIDS."
The couple's study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week, offered a number of possible reasons that this might be happening. And since its publication, other experts have weighed in on other trends that might explain this phenomenon. Below is a look at five of their theories. Many of them have to do more with psychological distress than traditional causes of death such as heart disease or lung cancer.

The virtues of righteous living, not giving in to sloth and worry, meditating on God rather than on this wicked world with its moral rot, these can make life a blessing and not a curse.
In contrast to the 50s and 60s, look at the chaos in young families with children when both parents must work to keep the government fat. I see it in my own family circle. With the insane schedules they keep on their 24 hr. treadmill, I’m surprised the children don’t have strokes before they get out of high school!
My first reaction to reading this was:
Well, this is a national emergency. Middle aged white people are the ones who pay the bills around here.
Exactly. I see this world as sort of a video game. It’s not the real world though, in the real world, it has real consequences.
My resolotion beyond the obvious - follow Jesus and His teachings, was to move from the city of Seattle to rural KY and reduce my taxable income as much as possible.
It reduces my stress and helps starve the beast. We’re both almost 62 and have no health insurance. We trust in the Lord.
He has been very good to us, and much of it in very tangible ways. I mean true physics denying miracles.
With is on the death certs, for heavens sake!?
Wow, sorry to hear that, baltiless!
Anything (previous conditions, lifestyle choices, etc.) in your medical history to explain that - or was it a bolt out of the blue?
Regards,
Oh, that’s helpful.
The death rate is falling for everyone everywhere but middle aged whites.
I’m almost 62 and have said for over two decades that once I hit 70 I’ll feel like I’m living on borrowed time. But, truth be told, EVERY day is borrowed time - from the Lord.
Make the most of every “today”.
What is happening right now is just the beginning (Obama in the White House, lots of "refugees" from muslim countries being imported). This can't end well.
In the mid 90's I worked for a Corp that was a subset of another major Corp. that eventually went bankrupt in a spectacular fashion. This was after employment with a Dow component that was the ultimate in efficiency to go to this laggard that put the fun back in dysfunctional. While at the laggard I was stunned at the inefficiency and saying to myself man these folks are in deep doo doo IMHO Chapter 11 wasn't out of the picture, 20 years later, it happened.
But my manager was always trumpeting "We have to go Global", "We have to be Diverse" and the employees knew they had to be Politically Correct.
Instead of focusing on the product, they focused on this *****hit.
The Twenty somethings then at this/these firm(s) would be the demographic now experiencing these health issues, hopefully they are not or found greener pastures.
How did NAFTA and all the other Corp politics wear them down and take us away from "making things", since we don't anymore, which frankly feeds men's souls.
Ping me privately if you want to know the names of the companies...
The routine administration of lipid-lowering medications may be to blame. They have been shown to damage muscle tissue, put a substantial burden on the liver, and deplete important nutrients, accelerate aging, and there is also evidence that they tend to make those taking them more inclined to risky and aggressive behavior.
I am now paying estate taxes - taxes that were already taxed when my hard-working father paid them. Yes, being pissed off is tough on the body!
My heavens,I want to cry,but I do understand your thought process.
I had a cranial bleed which led to a stroke and I never thought why me.I just chugged along and eventually went back to work after a few years off.
I panic at the first sense of dizziness, headache, balance problems or sudden ear pain.
Talking with my nurse co workers ,I was stunned at the number of them who have had strokes.
Stress is a real killer.
Hang in there.I ‘ll think of you at prayer time.
“Did he commit suicide or become homeless?”
I don’t know the details...he was skinny to begin with and maybe his depression stopped him from eating enough to survive - that’s the closest that I can come.
He actually wasn’t a personal friend, but he was very good at what he did and actually interested in his job. I tried to get him another job while he was declining, but he wasn’t up to it. Obviously I would have tried harder with him if I had any clue where it was leading.
Even male contraceptives may be defacto hormonal contraceptives. When men and woman have “unprotected” sex there are hormonal exchanges and changes that cannot occurr otherwise. Gives powerful meaning to the idea of “one flesh”. Ie a chemical state which cannot otherwise exist and which is presumably benificial.
Amen.
I’m middle aged, gainfully employed, healthy and happy! Most middle aged people are too fat and diabetes is a serious risk. But I refuse to go down that path.
It was a guy that had the stroke.
2years for me. Can’t get a comparable job because I am too old. Can’t get a job at half my old salary because I am over qualified.
I’ve read about that. It’s yet another indicator that God had it right from the start.
Standard hormonal contraceptives - pills, injections, implants - dramatically increase the risk of stroke in young women.
