WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD NOVEMBER 6, 2015

Posted on 11/06/2015 5:06:11 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Good evening gardeners. Sorry to be so late posting today, but life sometimes intervenes with the things we want to do.

We have had great weather here in Missouri this week. I have taken some time each day to not only do yard and patio cleanup, garden clean up and planting, but to just take a walk, and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful sunshine ( munch on a persimmon or two while at it).

The weather is due for a down turn, though and it is already @ 49 degrees and headed lower tonight. The garlic is in and green tops are showing, so I'll have to remember to check the anticipated lows, in case I need to cover the little things.

Hope all is well with you and yours. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Well not to brag but I have bananas and mangoes blooming this week!

I wanted to build a big flower bed on the outside of the wall of out lot using Cannas but those are not allowed to be imported here so I ended up using Gardenias

The pumpkins that were in are now out with a bang. The hops are in the beer and the beer is good. The rest is, well, resting.

I’d provide videos, but I’m waiting for a more country friendly BATF.

Wow. I love to smell Gardenias! Go ahead and brag! Wish we could grow stuff like that here- best I can do is a smallish dwarf lemon tree in the house. LOL

A picture is worth a thousand words, but words are better than nothing.

Fermentation experimentation: I just put some jars of fermented pepper purée in the fridge. We’ll see what happens in a couple of months. Anybody make hot sauce before that can give me some tips?

I have three banana trees - one is blooming, a 45 foot tall mango tree, a Thai-lemon tree, two papaya trees, and a passion fruit vine. We then rotate through various vegetables in other areas.

I want to build the flower bed out front because people from the apartment complex next door have been parking in front of my house and making noise at night. I can call the cops and make them mad at me or I can build a raised bed that they can’t park in. I sort of felt that the raised bed was the better option. I am debating if I should make the bed a bit wider and plant Hibiscus close to the fence and the dwarf gardenias in front. But either way this is a 36 foot long flower bed.

Excellent option, in my opinion, and in addition, to solving the noise problem it will smell heavenly.

Thanks for the Ping to this weeks thread. Glad you mentioned Garlic as I had to take the row covers off my Garlic due the @#$%^^%##&$@ Skunks & Raccoons messing with it and I'm concerned with the sporadic results of the planting. Lady Bender says not to worry but I'm worried IMG_4341

Yikes. I admire all you people who live in the colder climates. Missouri is bad enough. Sometimes I consider moving south. LOL

You are welcome. I see your concern, but it still looks pretty good to me. I only grow enough garlic for our use, and to replant, so my beds aren’t nearly as big as yours.

Cactus here is a lot like lilies and cannas. Guam is pretty strict on importing non native plants and I don’t think I could buy the plants. At least I haven’t seen them available. There is a six to seven foot tall decorative stone fence across the front of he property and crime is actually pretty low here so I am not doing this for security but stop a nuisance and to beautify the street and add curb appeal to the house.

My Baxter cherry tomatoes are still blooming and are still producing tomatoes. Skins on this late crop is much thinner and wife loves the taste.

We’re getting a late crop of San Marzano tomatoes too. We froze a lot of them, but I’m looking forward to 1 more batch before frost arrives.

All my jalapenos are doing well, must can some before frost.

The rest of the garden is pretty well over. Am waiting for the last of the okra to make seed for next years crop. Have already gathered the Cajun Queen okra seed, but am waiting on the pods on the velvet variety to dry.

All in all, it was a great year for a garden. But I have quite a few potted plants to move into the sun room for the winter. Blueberry plants, Orchid Tree, Jolero Jalapeno, Greek Oregano and Rosemary plant.
