Please don't post large animated GIFs

This is a plea from those of us with limited bandwidth. This morning there was a touchdown animation that took about 2 minutes to load on my browser. It was in a thread that was completely unrelated to football or touchdowns. There are an increasing number of animated GIFs showing up that are either unrelated to the topic or superfluous.

Videos like youtube links are automatically blocked from loading until you ask to load them. Those are great and I select a few to click and load. Links to animated GIFs could be replaced with a single frame GIF of the same content although only in some cases.

Animated GIFs are downloaded whether I want them to be or not to be downloaded. Obviously a very large high res static GIF might also chew up some BW, But an animated GIF even medium or low res can have lots of frames and take lots of bandwidth to download. It can be the same (in BW terms) as loading the thread with hundreds of low-res pictures. If someone knows a way to stop those kinds of downloads in Safari, I would like to know that too.

Thanks for listening and for your consideration.

Do you have a link to the touchdown animation?

Find your browser options and turn off loading images automatically or get an image blocker add-on.

Is your computer plugged in? Is your modem plugged in?

Sounds like you need to tall to your internet provider and discuss your problem.
Upgrades in your equipment may make a big in the performance. This is most
likely a user problem and not a sender problem.

I’m sorry you are stuck using 20 year old technology, but exactly why should everyone else on FR be limited by your problem?

I'm torn on that issue. Here's a great example in a thread: Club for Growth claims credit as Trump drops in Iowa Scroll down and you can see a nice GIF of triumphant Hillary walking into the Benghazi hearing and high fiving the E Liar Cummings guy (I think that's him) except he doesn't high five back because he is not as stupid as she is. Instead he extends his had for a more professional (but just as biased) handshake.

A great animation but not a related thread and it takes up 5.5MB of my precious BW. Ok not precious but a chunk of my time.

No, but see post 10 for a different example. A somewhat useful animation demonstrated what a clueless political hack Hillary is, but on an unrelated thread.

Do you have a link to the touchdown animation?

It was a gif of the Michigan / Michigan State fumble recovery, here:

I actually don’t usually have problems, but sometimes they are just annoying (if they are literally big).

Last night I had trouble with our iPad, and when on this site noticed a certain ping with animated GIF was posted numerous times - thus, with my iPad acting up, FR would not really ever finish.

As I said, I generally don’t mind unless they “get in the way” (in your face sort of thing), but I can definitely see why some people wouldn’t like it.

Next up: GIGANTIC JPEGs that minimize all the text on the page!

I have fast service but get tired of the same old gag GIFs and other annoying images. I’ve found that blocking the typical sources (right click to see the serving sites) gets rid of about 80% of them. Once in a while I’ll miss something I want to see but not often.

Find your browser options and turn off loading images automatically or get an image blocker add-on.

There's your answer.

Not to tell others to stop posting things that most Freepers are able to enjoy.

No, that is not Elijah Cummings. (He’s my rep.) Cummings has absolutely no hair of any kind on that shiny head.

You can turn off loading of images and animations in Preferences. Doubt you’re going to have much luck in getting people to stop posting them.

Part of the reason I like FR is the clever photos and gigs. Usually more entertaining than the comments
